Eyas Tran seems like any other three-year-old at first. He’s active, inquisitive, smart, social, and likes to be helpful. Part of his daily routine includes riding his bike with his family and making sure that his elderly neighbor’s newspaper is delivered directly to her door.
That last part of his routine may have saved his neighbor’s life.
Here is how Eyas saved Peggy:
Eyas’ routine
Each day, when Eyas is out in the neighborhood to get some exercise with his family, he finds his elderly neighbor’s newspaper, usually left on the walkway or lawn, and brings it right up to her door to deliver it in person. He wants to make sure she doesn’t have to struggle to reach to get it.
He also rings the bell each time so he can hand the newspaper to her directly without her having to bend down. It’s just something he has always felt compelled to do. It’s also something that Peggy was grateful for, and his parents encouraged.
Something amiss
Eyas was out with his family that day and going through his usual routine of cycling and being a good neighbor. He brought Peggy’s newspaper to her door, as usual, and rang the bell.
However, that’s when the routine hit a roadblock. Peggy didn’t come to the door to greet him. Not only that, but there were also several days of newspapers already sitting on her doorstep. He counted them:
“One, two, three.”
Something wasn’t right about the situation, and he was worried, so he told his parents.
They agreed that it wasn’t normal for there to be a pile of newspapers from the previous two or three days sitting on the doorstep. It was also a little strange that Peggy wasn’t opening the door. They started to become concerned as well.
First, they tried to call Peggy on her phone, but she wasn’t answering that either. Next, they check to see if her car was in her garage – it was. They tried the door again, and again there was no response.
They decided that Eyas had been right in being worried – something definitely wasn’t right. However, there wasn’t much else that they could think of to do on their own.
That’s when they decided to call the police to investigate and find out what had happened to Peggy.
It’s a good thing that they did.
A successful rescue
When the police arrived at the elderly woman’s house, they discovered that Peggy had been trapped in her own basement for three very long days. She had gone into the basement, as she has countless times before without any incident. However, this time the door had closed and locked behind her, leaving her without an escape.
Luckily for her, she had a secret weapon – in the form of a curious three-year-old who wanted to make sure that she was okay. He may have taken a few days to get there, but he arrived in time.
Peggy seemed to be okay, although the paramedics brought her to the hospital to do a thorough check and to treat her for issues, such as dehydration, that often arise in these types of situations.
She would be back at home just a couple of days later, all thanks to one very helpful three-year-old neighbor.
