When the tenants, a couple and their adult son, applied to live in the home, they seemed like decent people. The landlord had no idea of what was to come.

After years of saving up, Simon Andrew was finally able to buy a second home for the purpose of renting it out.

Once Andrew had fixed the home up, he put it on the rental market and soon found some keen potential tenants.

These tenants were a couple and their adult son.

“They seemed very respectable, nice people.” – Simon Andrew.

Soon, they had signed the lease and moved in. Then Andrew’s life and property were trashed.

Andrew got complaints from the tenants’ neighbors. They claimed that the family kept on moving a wide range of animals into the property.

Initially, Andrew refused to believe what the neighbors were saying.

The tenants had seemed so reasonable. Who would bring in a whole zoo of animals into their home? Then he discovered the truth.

“There were definitely a goat. There was definitely rabbits. There were chicken. They definitely had quails in the house. I saw those.” – Simon Andrew.

Before he ever saw the animals, he could smell them. Their feces covered the property. No wonder the neighbors had been complaining!

Naturally, Andrew began the process of evicting the nightmare tenants. But this turned out to be a long and harrowing experience.

Over the next seven months, the authorities dithered as the neighbors continued to complain.

Because of the unsanitary nature of the property, Andrew at first thought that the eviction process would be smooth.

But as the months went by, nothing was happening, and his property only got worse.

Eventually, the tenants were removed, and Andrew could finally get inside. He was expecting the place to be trashed, but even he was shocked at what he found.

Many of the rooms were piled with junk. Over the next few days, he would end up filling two dumpsters to the brim with all of the trash. Among this junk, Andrew was expecting to find a mound of animal feces. But the animal carcasses that he discovered were truly revolting.

When he had finally removed all of the trash and animal waste, Andrew set about cleaning up the home.

Pretty soon, the home was looking good. But the stench of the animals just wouldn’t go away.

In the junk, Andrew found photos of the tenants in previous rental properties. Those previous homes were also filled with animals, living indoors with the tenants.

Lastly, Andrew had to conduct a range of repairs. He estimated that these repairs would cost him approximately $30,000, a sum he could not afford.

Andrew’s story gained the attention of a local news reporter, who contacted the Landlord Tenant Board, which governs legal rental proceedings in Andrew’s hometown.

It said that in most cases, eviction requests are processed within a month, but that it is possible for either a landlord or tenant to adjourn the decision.

Hopefully, Andrew will be able to make the repairs and get rid of the overpowering stench.

If he manages this, he plans to only rent out the property to people on a short term basis.

Of course, this story is an extreme case of what can happen when someone rents out a property. But those tenants are still out there and still bringing animals into their unlucky landlords’ homes.
