We often have that gut feeling to do something or look somewhere only to find ourselves reaching out to somebody who needs help.

This story is about two young girls who saved two kids just outside of their home right in the nick of time.

They were acting on instinct.

Jasmine and Jacora are typical teenagers.

The 15 and 17-year-olds, respectively, were in their room in their 3rd-story apartment in Des Moine, Iowa when the incident happened.

The sisters were watching TikTok videos when one of them instinctively looked out the window and saw the two kids struggling to get out of the water.

“I immediately screamed, ‘They’re drowning.’ And then, me and my sister, we ran downstairs… We were falling down the stairs to get back here,” said Jasmine.

They ran as fast as they could into the children.

To make matters worse, it was icy.

That meant the water outside their home was partially frozen and certainly no place for a child to be.

“I just stopped what I was doing, got up and I was just running out. I was just in shoes, shorts, and a tank top,” said Jacora, not minding the cold weather outside.

The sisters did not hesitate to jump into the icy water to save the drowning kids. They were about 7 to 8 years old.

The girls put the kids’ safety first.

“I’m numb. So, those kids, they’ve been in there longer than me. They’ve got to be numb. At some point, they were going to just stop moving, and I didn’t want them to just stop moving,” shared Jasmine. “So, it was just, ‘Come on, just get them out. You can get out later. Just get them out.’”

Only a finger above the surface.

The fact that water was frozen ice, one kid was under it and only had one finger above the surface.

Jacora managed to hold the kid’s finger and slowly moved him out of the cold water.

Their quick action on what was happening helped save the two kids, even though rescuers were coming to the scene.

“You could see the relief and the happiness that he was out the water and both of them were safe,” recalled Jasmine.

When medics arrived, the two kids were already out of the water and safe, all thanks to Jasmine and her sister Jacora.

Even the medics were “amazed”.

Doug Harms, West Des Moines EMS Division Chief, said in an interview,

“I was amazed. Not many children would drop what they’re doing – or adults – and just run out and wade into water up to their shoulders to pull two other kids out.”

Their mom was very proud.

“I’m very proud,” said Jacqueline, the mom of the two sisters who saved the kids. “I really don’t have the words to say because every time like, ‘Wow, those were my girls,'” she added in an interview.

But the sisters were just happy with the outcome and thankful for their quick response.

“I’m just happy they’re OK,” said Jasmine.

Their swimming lessons and fast reaction skills helped save lives.
