“Shallow men believe in luck; wise and strong men in the cause and effect.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson
When you decide to own a car and begin to drive it, you should know that you are accountable, not just for yourself, but to anyone you will encounter while you are driving.
Your responsibility includes your passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians, and even all those non-living things around you.
According to a survey done by the NHTSA, about 28 people die in DUI-related accidents each day in the United States alone.
That’s one person every 52 minutes.
No matter how careful you are when you’re driving, if there is one person who is selfish enough to drink and drive – then your life is also in danger.
It was just after midnight when friends Hunter Hasenjaeger, then 16, and Collin Barry, then 17, were on their way home when they noticed a commotion.
They saw several vehicles had crashed.
Fire and thick smoke filled the air.
There were other people on the scene, and they were shouting about a baby inside a car.
Alarmed, the Hunter and Collin took their phones and turned on their flashlight, and there they something gut-wrenching.
A 27-year-old pregnant woman was trying her best to grab a car seat, and there, her one-year-old baby girl was screaming.
The teens didn’t waste any time.
Hunter took the phone and shone the light on the car seat while Collin carefully reached inside to unstrap the little girl. Then he grabbed her and took her outside.
Hunter tried to calm the injured mother. He told her to hang in there since help was on the way. He assured her that her little girl was okay.
The two teenagers decided to stay with the mother, Alexis Danley, who died shortly due to her injuries.
Her unborn baby died with her.
Alexis’ one-year-old daughter was examined by doctors and miraculously didn’t suffer any injury. She was later given to her grandmother.
Hunter shared that after the incident, he felt shaken. He said he would cry and feel bad for what had happened to Alexis.
He would console himself with the fact that the little girl survived.
He also visited her.
He visited her; brought her food and even a teddy bear for her to hug.
The person responsible for the chain of the car crash and the death of Alexis and her unborn baby was Jacob Kaminski, who was 23 years old at that time.
It all could have been avoided.
He was arrested for drug paraphernalia, cannabis possession, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and drunk driving.
No coming back.
This person’s selfish and irresponsible act ended a mother and her unborn child’s life.
Because of him, a little girl can no longer hug her mother and sibling.
Judge Robert Pilmer sentenced Jacob Kaminski to four years imprisonment for Reckless Homicide of an Unborn Child and another eight years for Aggravated Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol Resulting in the Death of Another.
Kaminski is to serve his 12-year sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
It doesn’t rectify anything.
There are still many other civil suits that were filed against Kaminski, some of which are still pending.
As for his criminal case, Kaminski had to pay $12,401 for the restitution and other court costs.
Thanks to Collin and Hunter, Alexis’ little girl is alive and well.
These teens are heroes.
Sadly, even though justice was served, this can never bring back Alexis and her unborn child. Do you think 12 years is enough for what he did?
