You might hear about life and death situations on the news all the time. You read them and wonder “What would I do in that situation?”. The truth is you can’t ever really know how you’ll do.
Life or death situations are often unexpected, and it’s usually about knowing how to think on the spot rather than being prepared. This Mississippi teen is a shining example of that.
This is 16-year-old Corion Evans. He was on the news after saving the lives of 3 girls and one officer.

It happened when 3 teenage girls lost control of their vehicle and ended up in the Pascagoula River.
Now, they were in nearly 2 tons of sinking metal and unable to free themselves.
The nearly 80-mile-long river stretches from Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico. Given its proximity to residential areas, unfortunate incidents like this aren’t impossible.

A nearby police officer saw what happened and tried to save the girls.
But things also went south for the officer, who now found himself in the same situation.
Now, 4 people were drowning in the Pascagoula River. Not good.
Things could have gone worse if it weren’t for this teenager who was also close by.

16-year-old Corion Evans witnessed what was happening and wasted no time.
The teen bolted for the river, knowing lives were on the line. He could probably hear that there were multiple victims in the water.
Every second is precious time, so he hastily removed his shirt, shoes, and phone and dove into the water.
He swam to the four victims. There were four of them and only one of him, so he’d have to work fast and hard to save everyone.

“I was just like, ‘I can’t let none of these folks die. They need to get out the water’. So, I just started getting them,” – he said
Good thing swimming is something Evans is good at.
He’s been doing it since he was 3-years-old. The teenager says that the car had already sunken significantly when he arrived. Only a small portion of the car was still visible above the water.
Evans was capable of keeping himself and the three girls above water. He helped keep them afloat and pulled them to the shore.

The officer, too, was already going under. He screamed for help as he was drowning, and Evans made it to him just in time.
And just like that, the humble 16-year-old saved 4 lives.
To think what could have happened if he wasn’t at the right place at the right time.

One of the girls, Cora Watson, went out of her way to thank him on Facebook.
Not every 16-year-old can say that they’ve saved a life – let alone 4 in one day!

“I’m glad nothing happened to him while was trying to save other people’s lives. I was really proud of Corion cause he wasn’t just thinking about himself. He was trying to really get all of those people out of the water.”

Of course, his mom is incredibly proud of him.
I bet she’s going to tell this story to their relatives every chance she gets. I know I would!
Oh, and the police station extended their thanks to Corion too for saving officer Gary Mercer.
“The police department and I commend Mr. Evans’s bravery and selflessness he displayed by risking his own safety to help people in danger. If Mr. Evans had not assisted, it could have possibly turned out tragically instead of all occupants rescued safely.” – said chief Brandon Ashley
