They say home is where the heart is, and when it comes to Bryson William’s grandparents’ house, nothing could be closer to the truth.
Bryson, a 15-year-old from Massachusetts, has spent much of his life creating memories at his grandparent’s Litchfield Park home in Arizona.
On his GoFundMe page, the teen writes, “My brother and I have visited from Massachusetts every year, multiple times a year (usually all summer), and even every other Christmas, for the last 12 years. We have countless memories here and friends who have known us since I was born. We love seeing our family, and my grandparents love their home here.”
However, this year when Bryson and his brother arrived at his grandparents’ house for their annual visit, something was different— a ‘for sale’ sign had been placed in the front yard.
Bryson was devastated; his grandparents had worked long and hard to keep their beloved house, even rebuilding it from scratch when it was destroyed by a fire in 2005, only 3 short years after moving in.
At one point, however, Bryson’s had grandfather required a knee surgery which had subsequently prevented him from working. As a result of his unemployment, the bills started piling up, and the older couple could no longer afford to keep their home.
According to Justice in Aging, this type of situation is more common than one might think. Reports estimate that there are about 6.4 million American seniors living in poverty right now— and that number is expected to increase to 72 million by the year 2030.
Brian was shattered by the news of the impending sale, telling Fox10, “I’m heartbroken we might not be able to come here, and I might not be able to bring my family here when I’m grown up.”
Not willing to let his grandparents’ house be taken away so easily, the young teen devises a plan, setting up GoFundMe account in order to raise the money needed to buy the house.
When the internet caught wind of Bryson’s endeavor, they were eager to help in his mission, ultimately donating over $21,000 to his GoFundMe account.
However, it’s unclear what has happened since then. Bryson’s page is no longer accepting donations, and the last update on his Help Me Buy My Grandparents Home Facebook page is dated to July 12th, 2017.
Bryson had stated that could he not meet the amount needed to buy the house, all of the funds would instead be donated to his grandparents to help pay for their moving expenses.
