Any parent’s worst nightmare is receiving a call about a crucial situation, hearing their children are involved, and not being given further details about it. Nothing triggers a panic attack quite like not knowing what’s happening to your kids.
This dad had the same feeling when his wife called about their son Canaan, who was on spring break at the time.
The only details the wife could relay to her husband came from a vague message their son left her.
“He called me to say he wrestled a man who was trying to hurt some kids at a gas station in Dona Ana. We hung up and now I can’t get a hold of him.”
Upon hearing this, the worried dad hung up and tried to phone his son. When there was no answer, he went ahead and drove to the gas station his wife named.
True enough, the gas station doors were locked when he arrived.
“I was paranoid and frantically trying to find him. I called the gas station as I drove through town looking for his truck. No sign of his truck. No answer on his phone. Is he at a hospital? Maybe he’s at the police station.”
Finally, the dad was able to get in touch with the gas station clerk.
“I was told my son was there and may have gotten involved with a guy, possibly even fighting the guy?”
After the clerk offered a brief description of Canaan, the dad was able to confirm that his son was indeed involved in a wrangle.
But to his surprise, the clerk continued to describe the situation in detail, outlining how heroic Canaan was.
“Oh my God sir, your son…he was…your son…was…was…awesome. There was an evil man here with an evil laugh trying to kidnap some kids. He didn’t care about anyone. He was hurting people. We were throwing bottles at him and nothing was working. He beat us up really bad. We knew the police were a long ways away and we knew this man was going to take the kids because we couldn’t stop him. As soon as I realized the kids were in danger and the evil was going to win, the door opened up and your son walked in. He didn’t hesitate. He jumped in, overpowered this man, and held him down until the police got there.”
Finally, Canaan got in touch with his father who immediately asked about the situation. The 16-year-old was genuinely surprised to hear that his father already knew about it. Explaining his side, Canaan said,
“Dad, I just did what I had to do. That lady and her kids needed me. I held the guy until the police showed up and then I went about my day.”
It was a very simple explanation that showed just how much character the young man possessed.
He didn’t even think twice about tackling the man who was about to abduct three innocent children; all he knew was he had to do something to help.
The brave teen may not have realized just yet how impactful his actions were but his dad was extremely proud.
“I was proud of him. I squeezed him. I didn’t even let the front door shut before he found himself swallowed up in my arms. ‘Dad, you would’ve done the same thing.'”
The young State Wrestling champion was a true hero. He prevented a kidnapping of 3 children who were headed for sex trafficking.
He was at a different gas station when he saw and heard the commotion happening right across the street and he didn’t hesitate to dash inside and help.
It’s easy to declare in conversation what one would have done in the same situation but actually taking action is an entirely different thing altogether.
Canaan didn’t even consider his own safety when he apprehended the man who was about to endanger the lives of innocent children.
The proud father shares,
“Canaan did what needed to be done, with no intention of profiting or gaining attention. Canaan is strong and skilled. More importantly, Canaan is a great person with a heart for people and doing the right thing. Love conquers all.”
