We may not always recognize it, but there are more good people in your community than you might realize. A grocery shopper and grocery employee proved that our community bonds extend far beyond our family and friends and coworkers. With a simple act of kindness, these two demonstrated how we should be looking out for every person in our community, and that we should keep in mind that there is plenty of support out there for everyone.

A simple grocery shop at an Indianapolis Kroger became a symbol of human kindness.

On Indianapolis’ North Side, there is a Kroger grocery store that Josh York is a regular at. And, at the time of this event, Colin Coleman was a 16-year old grocery store employee who had been working there for 6 months.

In that time, Colin and Josh became somewhat familiar with each other. Josh York is visually impaired, so he needs some help to see the products at the grocery store. One day when Josh went to Kroger for his normal grocery shopping, Colin recognized him and immediately began to guide him around the store and help him find what he needed.

He didn’t stop until Josh’s list was entirely checked off. Colin helped to navigate the store and guided the cart around objects that could be obstacles. Throughout this moment of helpfulness, Colin and Josh were overheard making small talk and catching up on one another’s lives.

Another customer saw this generous interaction and snapped a picture of it.

In the picture, you can see the two really working together as a team to get the shopping done. The picture ended up being posted on the Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Facebook page, where it received 46 thousand likes, 2.4 thousand comments, and 9.9 thousand shares. People loved to see a sweet wholesome moment!

His kindness made a big difference.

Josh York might not have been able to complete his grocery shopping trip without the teen. Although he is able to see a little bit, such as colors and shapes, he is legally blind. So he really appreciated Colin’s actions, and not just because he helped him around the store, but because Colin made sure to treat the experience with respect and kindness. Josh says:

“He acted more human than as if he was just there to collect a paycheck.”

But for Colin, it was no big deal.

Colin often helps out customers, and specifically York. He knew exactly what to do because of his previous work experience. He says:

“I’ve seen him in here before and I’ve helped him before so, it’s the usual.”

But even though Colin doesn’t seem impressed with his own kind behavior, lots of other people felt their spirits lift because of him.

Colin got an award, and Josh got a great shopping experience.

While Colin may not have thought his actions were anything out of the ordinary, his boss was very proud of him. His boss cited Colin’s young age as exceptional for being on-hand to help out those in need. As a result, Colin received the Customer Satisfaction Trophy for the week, which he was presented amidst a field of applause, and he even got a hug.

Speaking with WTHR, he says:

“It was the best thing to do. I have to take care of other people…At the end of the day, we need to understand that we are all on the same level, no matter what, so we treat each other exactly the same, with respect.”
