Crocheting has really come to the forefront in the world of hobbyists lately as it is relatively easy to learn and you end up with beautiful handmade products.

While some people see the art as an ‘old lady’ hobby, one 15-year-old from Cherry Valley in Riverside, California proved the naysayers wrong.

Noemi Mendez, a tenth grader, decided she would crochet her own Quinceañera dress by hand.

A Quinceañera is the celebration of a young girl’s 15th birthday, it is meant to signify her leaving behind her girlhood and entering into womanhood. Quinceañera’s are often over-the-top celebrations full of family, friends, good food, and good fun.

Many girls spend months agonizing over their dress decisions but Noemi decided she wanted hers to be extra special.

She spend a total of 4 months, with a few breaks here and there, to create her custom made, one-of-a-kind gown. The dress was worked in a cobalt blue color with a bright pop of magenta around the hem. Noemi also crocheted some small flowers and butterflies that she sewed onto the skirt.

The 15-year-old is self-taught and has been crocheting for about 2 years.

Most of the projects she has created previously have been small items, such as hats, or stuffed animals so deciding to make her own dress was a huge undertaking. Luckily for Noemi, her mother Daisy supported her fully in this endeavor.

“If you think you can, I believe you can,” her mother said to her, “and if for some reason it doesn’t work out, we’ll just buy one.”

After taking her measurements and choosing her design and colors, only one more thing was needed; a crinoline. The crinoline is a garment that goes under a skirt or dress to give it lots of volume and poof, and it fit in with Noemi’s dress perfectly by giving it a little extra extravagance.

On the big day when Noemi was finally able to show off her creation to family and friends, she was glowing with pride.

She says that she loves her dress and hopes to be able to pass it on to her own daughter one day, should she ever have one. With hopes that it will turn into a family heirloom, Noemi is sure to take very special care of the beautiful dress in order to keep it in pristine condition.
