This teacher recently posted a video to Tik Tok about not assigning homework to her students. She didn’t post it with the intent of going viral, but thats exactly what it did when a few viewers lashed out at her for it. There were people that were saying she wasn’t doing her job and that homeowrk makes sure students get something out of class. After the original video went viral she explained her reasoning in another upload.
“There’s no proof that homework is going to make them better students in my class.”
This teacher believes that connecting and relating to them in the classroom in a variety of ways is more important than sending them home with hours and hours of homework.
One way she relates to them is through social media. Though being friends with students is typically frowned upon, they can still share funny content or videos on Tik Tok through teacher accounts that remain professional. These interactions outside of the classroom create stronger bonds between the students and their teacher.
Some people don’t realize that students today, especially high schoolers have a lot of pressure on them. School isn’t the only thing they’re dealing with. Some have jobs and take care of their family. In a pandemic, more and more high schoolers are taking care of younger siblings or their families are struggling financially. The burden of not knowing where their next meal is coming from may outweigh the burden of homework.
That’s why she is doing what she can to lighten their load if only a small amount.
She also wants to make sure that all their students have time outside of class to just be kids. They have a lot of responsibilities in other classes and life outside of school, and just like their parents want to relax after work, kids want to relax after school.
It’s not that she is totally against homework, she understands that there are benefits in certain courses. She runs her classrooms in a way that lets her students know that if they’re not working hard the work they have in class will go home, but so far that hasn’t happened yet. She uses assessments and other modes of teaching to measure how each student is doing every day.
If anything, I think that this teacher is showing how much she cares for her students. She’s taking the time to show that she understands that sometimes there’s more to life than just school, and though it’s important, so is every aspect of their life.
