There will come a time when you will defy the odds because you paid attention in class.
Remember the times you complained about a certain lesson because you felt like it was something you couldn’t use in real life?
That’s not what happened here.
Whether we like it or not, these lessons are taught to us for a reason.
In Metro Tech High School, a teacher and student realized how fortunate they were when the student saved the teacher’s life.
It was all because he was paying attention in health class.
Ellen Driscoll and a co-faculty member were enjoying lunch when the incident happened.
They were walking through the campus when Driscoll’s friend suddenly felt ill.
As they passed by the volleyball court, Driscoll knew that her friend was about to pass out.
As it was happening, the quick-thinking teacher reached out to one of the students to ask for help.
Salim Mohamed answered her call.
Word of the incident reached the gym where Salim Mohamed and his coach were training.
Mohamed said that two girls came into the gym and called his coach.
The coach ran to where the teachers were with Salim following close by.
They then found the teacher lying on the ground. She was unconscious but that’s not the most distressing part about all this.
They suspected her heart stopped.
That’s when Mohamed jumped into action.
He immediately performed chest compression to try and resuscitate the teacher.
Driscoll called 911 and put the dispatcher on speakerphone.
His fellow students, meanwhile, took off their hoodies and covered the scene to give everyone involved some privacy.
What transpired next can only be described as the longest five minutes the people on the scene have ever felt.
With encouragement from Mohamed’s coach, they kept on doing CPR until the first responders arrived.
The teacher regained consciousness.
They said she came back gasping for air. Nonetheless, everyone was impressed and thankful for what Mohamed has done.
“No one asked him,” Driscoll said to ABC. “He just jumped in to help and it was like an angel coming down because I was very afraid. To have someone come in and willing to help was magical, just amazing.”
Mohamed said it was thanks to school.
The student, who was studying auto collision at Metro Tech High School, said that he learned how to do CPR in health class.
Just like everyone else who learned how to do the maneuver, Mohamed never thought that the day would come when he needed to perform it.
However, he said that it is still something that everyone should learn especially when emergencies can spring out from the most unexpected moments.
A letter to parents
In a letter to the parents, Principal Bryan Reynoso clarified what happened.
He said that the teacher suffered a seizure. Later on, they explained that the teacher actually suffered a heart attack.
It only goes to show that what we learn from school can be the difference between life and death.
And that heroes, most of the time, come from the most unexpected places.
