Brett Nichols was invited by his old high school to perform during the school’s hoop rally.
He was excited but scared.
He had no idea how his old school, where he doesn’t know anyone anymore except for the teachers, will react to his performance.
Brett is an alumnus of Pitman High School in Turlock, California. He has been dancing to Michael Jackson’s songs since he was 11 years old.
It wasn’t until he performed during the Pitman High’s Talent Rally in 2014 that his classmates really knew his dancing talent.
“My friends really encouraged me [to join the talent show]. This is more for them than it is for me,” Brett told Turlock Journal. “It’s taken a life of its own. I didn’t think it would go viral.”
With over 15 million views within a week since it was uploaded on YouTube, the video has captured the attention of different news media outlets.

But most importantly, it captured the attention of the Jackson estate.
The Jackson estate sent Brett two copies of Michael Jackson’s posthumous album, “Xscape,” plus invitations to attend the Michael Jackson Cirque de Soleil show in Las Vegas on MJ’s birthday.
“It’s really exciting that I’m being recognized by such an iconic family in American history,” Brett said.

And all this because he just wanted to dance to Michael Jackson’s songs.
And he had no idea his talent show performance would make him famous all over the world.
“I had gone to first period, and a resource teacher of mine showed me a comment on the official video where someone told me I’m big in the Netherlands. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s really cool.’ I was thinking a little big of myself,” Brett shared with HuffPost. “But it wasn’t until the next class where all these teachers came in … and they were like, ‘Look, you’re on MTV News.’”

Although he didn’t intend for this to happen, he just wanted to share his talent, Brett hopes that it inspires other people to share their own talent.
“I hope I’ve left my foot in the door, to begin something that generates positivity and what you put your energy into and what can happen to that and be a positive influence,” Brett shared.

His parents are very proud of him for sharing his talent.
They’re very proud of how his talent could pave the way for more teenagers to be proud of themselves.
“If you take just one thing that you love and give it everything, just do it and enjoy it,” Donna Nichols, Brett’s mother, shared with Turlock Journal.

Since then, Brett has capitalized on his fame and good fortune and has really embraced his tribute to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson.
And you know that worry Brett had about going back to his old high school to perform?
It turns out he had nothing to worry about.

“That moment when your high school asks you to come back and perform and you think nobody’s going to remember or care but instead cheer and welcome you with open arms. Thank you Pitman,” Brett wrote on Instagram.
If Michael Jackson were still alive, he’d be very proud of Brett and what he’s already accomplished at such a young age.
