Thanks to the kindness of strangers a 20-year-old driver was rescued from his vehicle after it flipped over into a ditch. Jonathan Janzen was riding along a South Carolina highway when he lost control of his convertible.

Janzen reports that he was trying to grab a book that was blown into the back seat by the wind and was driving at full speed when his car went off the road flipped over two or three times.

Bert Sorin said he witnessed the accident and immediately pulled over to see if the driver was OK.

“We could smell the gas dripping off of the car and we didn’t know if anyone was alive,” Sorin told ABC. “The four of us tried to lift up the car but we couldn’t do it.”

Louis Doleac also witnessed the car flipping over and ran out to help free Janzen from the overturned vehicle. Several more individuals ended up pulling over to assist with the rescue.

“Everybody stopped,” Doleac told WISTV. “Everybody wanted to get that guy out. Everybody wanted to save this guys’ life.”

About a dozen individuals ended up joining the rescue effort.

“The more minutes passed by, the more people showed up,” Sorin said. “They were using pliers, anything, just banging at the car to try to get the guy out.”

Those who stopped to help eventually lined up on one side of the car and began pushing it until it was right side up. They were able to free Janzen from the car in less than eight minutes.

“I think it was the surprise of our lives when we flipped him over and knew there was one guy in there,” Sorin explained. “He started talking immediately and I think he had a little blood on him and that was it.”

Thankfully, Janzen walked away from the accident with only a few scratches. Janzen said he is grateful for each and every person who stopped to help him that day.

“They didn’t know whether the car was going to blow up and they still risked their lives to save one stranger,” Janzen said. “Thank you so muc every single one of you. Whether you helped, whether you just stood there and watched and gave me a hug afterward, just thank you for your concern.”
