Children, especially at a younger age, tend to ask for a sibling. This can be the result of many different reasons.
For example, an only child may have friends who come from larger families and be curious about why he or she doesn’t have siblings as well.
Also, children- just like us, adults, really- tend to wish for what they don’t or can’t have. So, in that sense an only child might ask for a sibling, a child who has a sister could ask for a brother, and so on.
But is it really necessary to give a child a sibling?
Well, there’s no right or wrong answer to that. It really depends on the relationship with your partner, your own childhood and relationship with siblings, and of course, on whether or not you can afford or can physically endure another pregnancy.
“You’ll never, ever regret giving your son or daughter a lifelong playmate, supporter, and friend,” highlights writer and writing instructor Angela Anagnost-Repke.
At the same time, experts agree that while it’s great for children to have siblings and they undoubtedly benefit from each other, parents shouldn’t feel obligated to have more children if they can’t or don’t want to.
But, supposing a couple wants and can have more children, and the day actually comes that they get a positive pregnancy test, what’s next?
When and how should parents announce a pregnancy to their older children?
Well, this depends on the age of the children, but it goes without saying that the announcement will be something they will always remember.
So, when this Southern mama received the good news, she couldn’t wait to tell her daughter.
The woman decided that Christmas time was the ideal period to let her daughter know she would soon be big sister, so she did, and filmed the whole thing in order to have the girl’s reaction on camera.
In the video below, the young girl is sitting in the armchair in front of the Christmas tree.
Her mom is also there, starting to ask questions about the girl’s Christmas present.
“Do you remember what you aked Santa for?” the mother asks.
At first, the girl doesn’t even seem to remember what her dream present was, but she soon recalls it was a baby doll. When her mom asks her to guess what’s up, she thinks Santa brought her an actual doll, but her mom reveals she’s getting a real baby to play with.
“You’re getting a real baby that has a heartbeat, breaths, and coos- you’re a big sister!” the mother explains.
The little girl can’t hold back her tears of joy. She’s super excited and covers her mouth with her hands because she’s astonished.
Immediately, she breaks into tears and her mom encourages her to give her a hug. Then she shows her the ultrasound and the girl is really shocked yet incredibly happy.
They both confess they’re excited and, also, that they wish for the baby to be a boy.
“Team blue,” mom says.
The video is short, but it’s emotional enough to make the average viewer’s eyes tear up.
Head over to the video below to see for yourself how the little girl reacted to the big news.
