Being a teenager can be hard no matter what, but if you feel different and alone because of those differences, the world can feel incredibly difficult and especially daunting. For Matthew Christian, his sexuality and coming out to his family felt like a daunting and impossible task. While he knew his family and mother, in particular, to always love him with a warm heart, it still felt like an incredibly difficult talk, but he knew what he had to do.

After spending months planning exactly what he said to his mother and watching videos of others coming out to their parents, the 19-year-old finally decided to come out to his mom and decided to videotape the interaction.

Luckily, the incredible moment proved to be touching as the mother completely accepted him for who he is and told him that she loved him no matter what. Robin Christian, his mother, explained that she had suspected for a while, and didn’t care about what his sexuality was.

She explained to USA Today– “I always kind of had an idea. In a way, it was a little bit of a surprise. But it was also a relief that he finally did say something.”

Christian further explained that more than that, she became sad that he took so long to come out to her and that she wished he didn’t come out earlier.

The moment has since gone viral and showcases acceptance in the modern age, as well as the honest bond between mother and son that shines through in the video. Now 25, Matthew looks back at this moment with joy and has explained that he’s dated people since then and his parents have continued to support him every step of the way.

“I think the video has gotten so much attention not just because I was coming out in it, but also because it shows what a mother’s love should be,” Matthew reflected on the shared moment.

Shortly after the video, he came out to his father, who accepted his son for who he is as well.

Robin concludes to USA Today, “That’s still your child and it doesn’t change who they are.”

It can be incredibly hard to feel great while growing up and being different can be incredibly challenging during the teen years. Luckily, people like Matthew and Robin can be role models for mothers and their children facing moments like this together.
