Thankfully, several people were saved by the local emergency services, while others were lucky enough to be rescued by their brave relatives.

84-year-old Karen Lauder is wheelchair-bound, which means that when the hurricane hit, she couldn’t do much to protect herself.

Luckily, her 49-year-old son, Johnny Lauder, was close by when he realized she would probably be in danger because of the flood that followed the hurricane.

The man took his son and the two of them swam through flood waters for more than half a mile to reach grandma Karen’s flooded home.

The man captured the adventure on video and it gets scary as we see water everywhere, not knowing whether the woman inside the destroyed house was still alive.

“We’re looking at 4ft of water, and I’ve been swimming forever,” the man said in the video that was uploaded on YouTube. “We’re arriving to grandma’s,” the man can be heard telling his son at some point.

Indeed, moments later, the men entered the elderly woman’s home and they found her alive, but terrified and up to the neck in water.

Around her, there were all her belongings floating in the flood waters.

“I got her up on a table wrapped up so she doesn’t go into hypothermia,” the 49-year-old man said in the video, adding that “I’ve never seen her happier to see me.”

The man admitted that it was a rough experience and that getting to his mother’s home was hard, but he was glad they arrived in time to save the disabled woman. He’s convinced that she wouldn’t have made it if he and his son hadn’t arrived at her property in time, since the “water kept coming up faster”.

Once he had made sure his mother was safe, he took a selfie with her in order for everyone to know that she was going to be fine.

“I took a picture to make sure the family would know that grandma was safe,” he explained.

But their adventure didn’t end there. The men then had to take the woman out of the house and push the wheelchair through the water in order to take her to the hospital.

The Lauder family was one of the lucky ones that didn’t suffer a loss, although they were scared they would.

Similarly, a couple in Fort Myers climbed up in a loft above their garage praying and hoping to make it out of there alive, while they took what they feared might be their last selfie.

A woman was also rescued by the Coast Guard helicopters, after putting up a huge HELP sign on her windows.

The people in the area are still counting their losses from what may be Florida’s deadliest hurricane since 1935. Those who made it out of it alive can’t believe how lucky they were.
