Man gives tour of America’s ‘smallest’ apartment, a 78-square foot studio in New York
Could you live here?

If you’ve ever been a student, short of money, or living in an expensive city (or all three!), you’ll have experienced living in a tiny home.

Maybe your kitchen, bedroom and living space were all in one, studio apartment-style. It might have felt like the smallest place in the world at the time, especially if you had friends over.

But when you see the actual smallest apartment in America, your own tiny home will probably feel like a mansion!

Freelance designer Luke Clark Tyler rents a studio in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood in Manhatten. It’s just 78 square feet in size.

To put that into perspective, the average bedroom size in an apartment is 132 square feet. Luke’s entire home is half that size.

Luke essentially lives in a closet, but it doesn’t really feel that way.

His design skills clearly came in useful when he was doing his place up. It’s modern, clean and strangely spacious.

It probably helps that Luke doesn’t have all his furniture out on display when he doesn’t need it. His bed doubles as a couch, and he can also push the whole thing back into the wall to create more space.

There’s no TV in Luke’s room, and he mentioned in his home tour that some people find this a little strange, asking him what he does when his friends come over. Luke laughed and explained that they “talk to each other”. Old-fashioned or what?!

When it’s down, Luke’s bed is so wide that it takes up the whole living space. It’s unsurprising that he often keeps it propped up against the wall.

At the front of Luke’s room is his desk, where he works. Luke mostly freelances from home, which you’d think would make him a little stir-crazy, but he has a mirror in front of his desk that he says “deepens the space a little bit, so you’re not working at a wall”.

Luke’s closet is surprisingly spacious, which is good, because it’s where he stores most of his household items. Alongside his clothes, there are bathroom essentials, books, a printer, a microwave, dishes, and a tiny towel.

All of Luke’s dishes have to be washed in the bathroom sink, which is made less ideal by the fact that his bathroom is a shared one. Luke explained that he has to carry his towel and other items to the bathroom with him, dorm-style, whenever he needs to use it.

One of the biggest saving graces about Luke’s apartment is that it has very high ceilings. You might feel as if the walls were closing in on you, but there’s plenty of space going up. There’s also a big window at the end of the room that must provide a bit more comfort on those claustrophobic days.

What does Luke personally think about his home? For the most part, he seemed used to his way of life. He said:

“Coming home to a tiny apartment, I mean, this is what I’ve been doing for at least five years now. We adapt very easily as people.”

Could you live in an apartment as small as Luke’s? Do you think you ever had a home that rivaled his in small-ness? Check out his video tour below and let us know in the comments!
