On the occasion of legendary country singer and American Idol judge Shania Twain releasing Netflix documentary, Not Just a Girl, she opened up about her painful divorce and how her current husband helped her love again.

Back in the 90s, Twain was married to Robert “Mutt” Lange. The couple at the time hired Marie-Anne, a woman to whom they assigned taking care of their home.
The woman soon became close with Twain, and the two of them ended up being best friends, while Twain and her husband very often hung out with Marie-Anne and her husband, Swiss businessman Frédéric Thiébaud.

A few years later, Twain split up with her husband after he, allegedly, had an affair with their friend Marie-Anne.
At the time, Twain was heartbroken, as was Marie-Anne’s then-husband, Fred.
Their divorces and shared experience of their spouses having cheated on them brought Twain and Fred closer. They found support in each other and their friendship was basically what helped them go through that hard period.

“The person to comfort me was Fred because he’s been through the exact same thing,” Twain told Oprah in a 2013 interview. “Fred was safe. So it was really a beautiful and perfect friendship.”
In 2008, friends of Twain’s told People that the businessman had had a positive effect on the singer since they had come closer after their divorces.

The Grammy winner had started trying new things and she had even tried sky-diving for the first time. The impact the Swiss man had already had on the singer’s life was obvious.
“Having gone through the suffering of his family splitting apart at the same time and under the same extreme circumstances, he understands me better than anyone,” Twain wrote in a letter to fans.

Soon, rumors started going around that the two had been engaged, but Thiébaud’s representative denied them at the time.
In 2010, two years after the two had gotten closer, they announced their engagement. First, it was the businessman’s rep, and then it was Twain herself.
“Frederic Nicolas Thiebaud has been a true gift to me as a compassionate, understanding friend and over time, an amazing love has blossomed from this precious friendship. Fred and I are happy to announce, our ENGAGEMENT!” Twain announced.

The couple tied the knot only a month after their engagement was announced. They got married in Rincon, Puerto Rico, on New Year’s Day, 2011.
Only a few months after getting married, Twain appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where she narrated how their love story started and progressed.

In interviews the couple has given over the years, they have shared sweet moments between the two of them and Twain has praised her husband for being very thoughtful and preparing for her romantic surprises.
After spending 2020’s quarantine together, the couple and their two children have come even closer and the bond they have built seems to be unbreakable.
