A post by former journalist and current event planner Lia Del Castillo has been making the viral rounds since January for all the right reasons.

Since January 2, 2020 it has earned over half a million reactions and nearly 300k shares on Facebook. It all took place at a pizza restaurant.

Asking for scraps

While she and her family were dining at a pizza chain in the Philippines, Del Castillo saw a man looking for leftover food to eat. But what happened next was truly inspiring:

“Tonight while having dinner at Yellow Cab, inside SM The Block, I saw this old guy looking for leftover food on the table in front of us. Seeing nothing, he poured what was left of the pitcher and drank from the used cup. We just ordered food and only had 4 small chicken wings on the table,” she began.

A moment of kindness

She posted photos along with the great act of kindness from the restaurant’s waitress.

“As he was about to leave, this waitress saw him and stopped him to ask. “Sir ano po yun?,” the old man replied but I wasn’t able to make of what he said. But the waitress replied, “Sandali lang po sir bibigyan ko po kayo ng pagkain,” and she asked him to sit down.”

The questions are in Tagalog, the language of the Philippines. At first, the waitress asked what was going on and then said “Wait a minute, sir, I’ll give you food.”

Del Castillo said the waitress then gave the man a plate, utensils, and a soft drink and she was curious about what would happen next.

“To my surprise, the waitress handed him a whole box of pizza. To his delight, the old man almost wanted to cry. He ate and kept the leftover in his bag and waited for the waitress to pass by him. When she did, the old man said Salamat then left.”

Kindness begets kindness

Before the man walked out the door, other customers were inspired to show him kindness as well.

Del Castillo reported:

“Another group of men who saw this also handed him money, including my husband. I don’t know, I’ve done stories like these when I was a reporter and it never gets old. The kindness of people, the generosity and selflessness of others still amazes me.”

We’re all human

She marveled with her husband about all of the generosity, especially when the waitress could have easily asked him to leave. Del Castillo figured if he did get food it would be something small. She certainly didn’t expect her to hand him an entire box of pizza.

“She treated him like a regular, paying customer, even calling him ‘Sir.’ That to me is amazing. And really commendable. What a way to start the year,” she wrote.

It might be a little sad that we’re so surprised when someone treats the indigent like the humans that they are instead of ignoring or shaming them. But her story just goes to show there’s plenty of wonderful humans left in the world.
