With so many restaurants to choose from it’s sometimes hard to make a decision about where to stop. However, when it’s home-cooked food you’re craving, Cracker Barrel is one of those places that offer you some time to rest and enjoy a home-cooked meal, especially after a long day of driving. On most road trips one can come across a Cracker Barrel to make a stop.

The place was founded in 1969, when the first restaurant opened on Highway 109 in Lebanon, TN. Since then, they have expanded to 45 states, having more than six hundred restaurants today around the country. The years have passed, but the values that inspire the company have not ceased to exist.

The main value that runs through the company is that they are trying to offer guests a “home away from home” as they say, and this does not only reflect on the meals they serve, but also the attitude towards the customers.

And this attitude was what made a Cracker Barrel employee burst into tears a couple of years ago when they saw their manager doing something very few, if any, restaurant managers would do for their guests.

Grandparents and a toddler

An elderly couple with their grandchild entered one of the Cracker Barrel restaurants, tired from a long drive, as are most of the guests at these places. They just wanted to rest for a while and enjoy a warm, comforting meal that would keep them going for the rest of their trip.

Along with the couple came a toddler, who is their grandchild, but the little one was too exhausted from the long trip, so he immediately fell asleep. The two grandparents had no option but to share time holding the sleeping toddler in their arms, while they were trying to eat their food at the same time.

Now, this does not nearly describe a relaxing time for the couple, but, of course, they didn’t want to wake up the tired child.

Luckily, someone who knew what it is like to try to enjoy a few minutes of rest while eating your food happened to be around.

The restaurant manager notices the older couple

The restaurant manager saw the struggling couple and decided to help them. So, he went over to their table and asked if he could hold the boy while they were eating.

Yes, please!

The couple was surprised, but they accepted the offer. So, the man sat next to them, toddler in his arms, while the grandparents were enjoying their meal.

An employee that saw the manager going to the couple’s table was so moved by his act that they decided to take a picture of it and share it online.

“This brought tears! Definitely a wonderful man and great daddy—he has twins! You don’t see such kindness very often, anymore! This is my manager at Cracker Barrel,” reads the text that accompanies the picture.

Going above and beyond his job description

Obviously, Doug- as is the name of the manager- being a dad to twins, knew very well what it means to be able to enjoy a moment of rest, so he wanted to offer it to the elderly couple.

The post attracted lots of attention, with people praising Doug for his good deed. Indeed, a little kindness can go a long way and people like Doug prove that there is still good in people.

Don’t forget we can all be the kindness that someone else needs during a rough or tiring day.
