“Whether you’re Native American, African American, Christian American, left American, right American — kindness is that common language between us all.”
Those are the very words of an anonymous businessman who went out of his way just to hand out cash to random strangers on the San Carlos Apache Tribal Lands.
About half of the people living on the Arizona tribal land live below the poverty line. It’s not easy for these families but they make ends meet, one way or the other.
But this selfless individual, this Secret Santa, set out with $30,000 in $100 bills determined to make lives better this Christmas, even just for a month or two. And that is the true spirit of the season.
The anonymous man stands ready, receiving a blessing from the medicine man before giving a briefing to his uniformed elf recruits.
Santa took to the Sonoran Desert without his sleigh and reindeer, about to rain cash on the Apache tribal lands. This amazing individual says he’s had the intention in his heart for years.
“I’ve always felt, inside my soul, a spiritual connection with the Native American,” he said.
His elf recruits look ready to take on a Grinch army though.
Secret Santa is certainly wealthy, but it’s his kind heart that’s priceless. Dressed in a red shirt with a red hat, he walks up to people on their front lawns escorted by his elves ready to hand out bills.
A woman named Grandma Rose couldn’t believe it.
“It’s going to put more food on the table — more for my family to eat.”
Elijah Cooke, a young man who is no stranger to hunger, says he still plans to give the money he received to someone who needs it more. His father.
Velma Wilson was trembling as she held the bills, saying she could finally get her grandchildren what they’ve been begging for. Cat litter.
These are people who had no assurances of what they would eat the next day, and yet here they are thinking of others they could help with the money being handed out to them.
And yet, it wasn’t the money that brought these people to tears. It was the loving words Santa spoke to them.
“Do you know how special you are?” he says to one woman. “You’re a beautiful spirit,” he told another person on the verge of tears.
“You’re an example to every mom. You’re amazing,” Secret Santa told Nelvena Cobb. She got $400 but those beautiful words opened her heart and touched her soul.
He made these people feel like a million bucks.
And while not all of us have $30,000 to give away, we still have many other ways of reaching out and giving. Whether by deed or by beautiful words, we can light up someone else’s Christmas like never before.
A kind soul, a generous spirit, and a loving heart. Those three can go a long, long way as this businessman just proved.
