We might think that kids going to school and having lessons all day long will help them learn more, but if we think about their physical health, this might seem like a risk that may lead to problems for their well-being.

Staying in one place for long periods can be detrimental to one’s health, and this concern appears difficult to solve.

One school in Mexico found a solution to this problem, though.

And their idea is rather simple but effective.

At San Nicolas de los Garza in Mexico, a school had classrooms with bike desks.

The desks are regular desks, except for the fact that they have pedals underneath them.

This design enables students who are studying to burn calories as they learn from their lessons.

These sleek new desk designs have allowed the students to have the opportunity to keep their bodies active while enriching their brains with new knowledge.

This is the school’s response to keeping obesity rates low—something that has become an issue amongst Mexicans over the past years.

Doing exercise while absorbing various lessons may seem difficult, but it is the opposite.

“When we’re physically active it also helps keep us focused,” shared Reimy Rodriguez, 13 years old and in in her first year at Public High School 24. “It’s actually incredible.”

The pandemic has forced students to stay at home for so long, leading them to have fewer activities that should have helped them become healthier.

With the new desks on hand, the school’s principal, Sanjuanita Garcia, knows they are doing the right thing.

“After we got back to in-person classes, we began to observe lots of anxiety among our boys and how obesity shot up,” she said. “With this project, we’re trying to break down the problem.”

The school currently has two classrooms with bike desks, but they intend to do this for all the school’s 21 classrooms.

Miguel Ortiz, the owner of the company that built the bike desks, shared that this design was inspired by the Canadian school that pioneered the use of said desks.

He wanted to share the innovation with Mexican students, and the school was the start of his mission.

With this idea, Miguel created the design for a much lower cost than the original ones found in the Canadian school.

With the affordable price and the significant help it can bring to Mexicans, Miguel shared the unique desks for the students in the country to utilize.

It may be simple, but this certainly helps the students a lot.

Learning does not have to mean compromising a kid’s physical well-being. With the bike desks, students are now given the chance to grow not only thru the lessons they learn but by being physically well as they learn lesson after lesson.
