A couple of weeks ago, three sanitation workers in DeKalb County faced a situation they had not been prepared for.

The men had started their shift early and they were working quickly to get the job done in time, when they came across something really creepy.

ZahMontay Cherry, Richard Jones, and Peter Williams started their route as usual and planned to finish before 6 am.

“Our whole job is to move fast and swift, just to get the job done so that we can be able to get the job done by 05:30,” Peter Williams told Fox 5 Atlanta.

Indeed, these men do their best and they are excellent at their job, but that day they were bound to finish work much later than scheduled.

And this is because they found a teenager in one of the trash cans they handled.

“I dumped it and a body came out. I went to the driver and I’m like, ‘Man, there’s a dead body back there,’” Cherry told WSB-TV.

Cherry’s colleague took a closer look at the body and he knew they had to check with Williams and see how they should proceed.

“I saw her come out – he (Cherry) didn’t really react until I reacted. I was like ‘Whoa.’ I backed up (and) I noticed there was a little girl back there,” Jones recalled.

Indeed, Williams shut off the truck to make sure it would not crush the body, whether it was dead or alive.

“So, once they brought it to my attention I initially shut off the truck because once I stepped on the gas, it would’ve automatically crushed her,” he explained.

After that, he went to the back of the truck to check what was going on. At the same time, he made sure to call the authorities to come for an investigation.

“Then I went to the back of the truck to assess the situation,” Williams said. “When I noticed that she was reaching out, then [we] tried to get her out of the truck,” he added.

Moments later, the police arrived. Officers soon realized that the girl in the trash can was in fact a 15-year-old teenager who had been reported missing three days ago.

The Dekalb County commissioner of District 5, Mereda Davis Johnson, awarded each of the sanitation workers a certificate of appreciation for their alertness and the effort they put in to save the young girl who needed their help.

“Without the attention and dedication of these employees, there is no doubt great harm, if not death, would have been imminent. Great job Sanitation!” Dekalb County Police Department wrote in a tweet.

What a great job these men did to notice the young girl among the trash. Also, their quick thinking and swift action prevented the worst from happening to her.

Although no further information has been released about the missing girl, we hope that she is safe now.
