The class of 2020 is graduating during a strange and uncertain time. High school students thought they’d be going off to college or technical school with their friends. And college students probably thought they’d be entering a normal workforce. But now things have changed, including the way students are celebrating graduation.

That’s why more and more people are hosting celebrations at home. It might not be the same as being with all of your fellow students, but graduation is still a day to commemorate. Jayden Enes Gutierrez was celebrating with her sister and cousin recently when something unexpected happened.

Wearing their caps and gowns

Many people had already ordered their graduation attire before the lock down began. Because of the pandemic, many graduates thought they might wear their celebratory accessories while celebrating at home. So, two of the girls were standing in their yard in front of a sign while proudly donning their caps and gowns.

A sanitation worker drove by

Seeing the girls celebrate their graduation, he thought they were probably going through a rough time like everybody else. So, he wanted to do something to brighten their day. What he said next brought tears to their eyes.

A beautiful voice

The sanitation worker first started to sing. The girls could hear the tune of “The Greatest Love of All” by Whitney Houston. This song was appropriate considering the sanitation worker believes that children are the future.

Congratulating them

After he finishes singing, everyone gives him well-deserved applause. But then, he has something to say. He wants these girls to know they just achieved a major accomplishment in their lives.

Sharing sad news

Then, he told the girls he’d lost two daughters in an accident. As imagined, this must’ve been extremely hard for him. But when he sees other young women graduating and earning their degrees, it makes him happy.

Offering excellent advice

Some students might be feeling down because of everything the current situation has changed. They may even feel that completing school isn’t worth it. But that’s far from what this man has to say.

It’s all worth it

This kindhearted sanitation worker wants these girls to remember that all their hard work was worth it. He talks about one of his other daughters who got her master’s degree and now, she has a great job working at a local hospital. By sharing his story, he hopes to inspire these girls and others.

This man’s message to the two young girls? “Always keep reaching.” He doesn’t want them to settle for less than what they’re capable of.
