Rap star Gunna, together with social entrepreneur Jasmine Crowe, opened a grocery store inside Ronald E. McNair Middle School, in College Park, Georgia. That’s Gunna’s former school.

The place is well stocked with burgers, pizzas, fish, eggs, and fresh produce. Students can even find clothes, toiletries, and boxes of brand-new sneakers.

The best part is that all items are free!

Crowe is the founder and CEO of Goodr, and together with Gunna, they aim to eliminate food waste and hunger.

The store is replenished every week with vegan items available as well for those who require it. There are items that kids can prepare for themselves since most of them make their own meals.

After dropping off their kids at school, parents can now shop or use an app to reserve a shopping time slot or request items.

The kids can bring those items home. Parents with no internet can register at the school.

Just a few days after its opening, Crowe received several requests for food. That’s when they knew that what they were doing was necessary. Goodr gave students reusable shopping bags to help lessen waste. Plus the kids can shop anonymously.

Lots of families are experiencing poverty and the lockdowns only made it worse.

“Our students have gone through a lot. Our kids will say, ‘I didn’t eat last night,’ or, ‘My lights are cut off,’ or, ‘I’m living with my cousin or my auntie because I don’t have a place right now.’ This store is going to provide them some relief,” Principal John Madden said.

Grateful parents have been sending messages of thanks and support since most only earn minimum wage. Their kids are now able to come home and put food on the table.

This is community service taken to the next level.

“I just wanted us to do something that would last and just be more sustainable and that we can continue to build upon,” Crowe said.

The team-up between Crowe and Gunna has helped so many families while inspiring others, giving them hope for the future.

During the remainder of the school year, the store will stay open. They will close in the summer but all food items will be distributed to the students and their families to avoid waste.

Gunna has pledged to continue funding the store “as long as he is alive.”

Crowe has been helping others for nearly ten years now. It was in 2013, in her own Atlanta apartment kitchen, that she started feeding those in need. She would buy all the ingredients and cook, feeding so many people every weekend over the course of three years.

Crowe now hopes that celebrities and various brands will step up and sponsor feeding programs to help more people in need of filling their bellies.

It’s a wonderful initiative, one we hope will have others doing the same for their communities. Crowe and Gunna have helped so many families, and we hope others follow suit.
