A small act of kindness can come from anyone, even a small child. For one boy looking to do something kind for a classmate, that act of kindness wouldn’t go unnoticed – by the classmate OR the world. Maybe there IS some value in viral news!
A picture was taken at Clewiston Middle School recently that reminded us that we can all help people in need.
Lamar was walking to class with his friend when his principal snapped a photo of him. The moment depicted Lamar and his friend, Jerry Hernandez. Taking a picture of two kids walking to class doesn’t seem that special, that is until you see what Lamar did IN the photo.
Hernandez has Cerebral Palsy and uses a walker to navigate the school’s campus.
That day, Hernanzes was walking around the school grounds with his friend when it started raining. Instead of just continuing on, however, Lamar pulled out an umbrella and decided to hold it over his friend’s head, prioritizing his comfort over his own.
For Hernandez, it was a really kind moment.
“It really means a lot because people really don’t do that,” said Hernandez.
For the two boys, it was just a small reflection of the relationship they have together. That moment wasn’t just between the two of them, however. Their principal happened to see the act in progress and snapped a photo to post to Facebook. When the two boys saw, they knew that they were about to be posted online!
Internet users themselves, the boys knew immediately that they were about to end up on their principal’s Facebook page.
“I saw my principal take out her phone and then we were laughing because we’re like ‘we’re going to get posted on Facebook,” Hernandez said.
What seemed to be a standard photo would soon turn out to be a viral post! Jerry’s mom, Norma Escobar, saw the photo and burst into tears. Jerry having a friend that was that kind was what she dreamed of.
For Escobar, Lamar reminded her of the kind people still in the world.
Hope is a good thing, especially for a mom. Escobar knows that bullies exist in the world, but there are also kind people like Lamar who genuinely care for her son.
“I know there could be other kids or bullying you know kids like that exist you know. Seeing that gave me comfort made me feel good because Jerry is very loved and there are kids that are looking out for him,” said Escobar
Since the photo was taken, it has gotten thousands of shares across Facebook.
The post, later picked up by a local news station, currently has over 11k likes and 1.5k shares. It’s safe to say that people resonated with it! The reported, Matt Devitt, captioned the beautiful photo:
“Heartwarming scene Friday in Southwest Florida at Clewiston Middle School. 8th grader Lamar spreading kindness to a fellow classmate during a rainy day. Well done young man! “
