In 2015, Paige was an artist and student living in Hamtramck, Michigan. The street in Hamtramck was filled with potholes that make it difficult to drive anywhere. Tired of the countless potholes that the city hasn’t fixed, she took her tools and dove around town.

She filled the potholes with flowers to replace the old with plants that were a symbol of growth and beauty.

According to a Reuters report, Anton Schuurmans who lived in Brussels wanted to highlight the terrible condition of many roads across the city. To tell everyone of the roads’ current state, he went around town with a bag full of flowers, soil, and a small plastic. Then, he started planting potholes on the road.

The act wasn’t only a way to spruce up the neighborhood, but it’s a way of protesting against the slow process of construction by the government. These holes are dangerous to anyone. In fact, one flower pot vigilante said:

“In an area of America there were a load of potholes filled in with pot plants, although that’s not what we are doing here. We think it’s a good thing to do but it’s more than about making people smile. Potholes are a real problem and have the potential to be death traps for bikers and cyclists and with cars there is an issue with blow-outs to wheels. The whole point is to raise awareness of them.”

Many local governments have taken notice of these potholes.

Their reaction wasn’t positive. They are concerned that drivers may be surprised at the plant which is situated in the middle of the road. Thus, they are discouraging a lot of people from following this protest.

However, the results were beneficial.

Once the potholes gained attention, the holes were easily repaired and filled. In a nonviolent way, they were able to ask the authorities to fix the road. Also, it created a beautiful aesthetic for the neighborhood.
