It is always great to see an entire community come together to help one of its own.
It’s heartwarming to see people united despite what’s happening in our world today.
Unity and harmony could start in a community no matter how small, whether you know each other as long-time neighbors or as strangers who barely see each other.
As a community, we look after each other no matter how small the action may seem.
The community in Garfield Historic Neighborhood in Phoenix knew they had to look after their own, and they came together for that one goal.
It all started with one person who took notice and cared so much that he thought of doing something about it.
Ra’sheen Turpin has been a postman for nine years and knows this neighborhood well.
In almost a decade of work, he often passed by this route and knew Margo.
He passed by her home one day when he noticed that she’s been hauling palm fronds to a pile in her front yard.
This broke his heart.
At 81 years old, Margo shouldn’t be doing all that heavy yard work.
She said she loved caring for her yard as it helped her well-being.
However, she took a heavy fall three years ago that sent her to the hospital and left her with limited mobility.
She now walks around using a cane, thus, making it difficult for her to clean her yard and keep it up to code.
Ra’sheen snapped a photo of Margo doing yard work and asked for help through social media.
He posted the photo in a Garfield Historic Neighborhood group and called for help from the community.
Even with just the picture, you knew this woman needed help.
That’s when Stephanie Young answered the call.
Her business, Clean Sweep House Cleaning, offers yard and handy work services; that alone told her that she could help Margo since she had the resources.
She volunteered to clean her yard for free and did all the hard labor during her day off.
And just like that, Margo’s yard was clean – a week after her 81st birthday.
She appreciated Stephanie’s help because, as she admitted, she could not do all the work herself like she used to; she would always need a bit of help, and even the small ones were greatly appreciated.
Margo also said that other people in the community help her with small tasks from time to time.
What a beautiful community she’s surrounded by!
But that’s not all Garfield Neighborhood has to give; they have more love to share.
When they heard of what Stephanie did, they sent her donations to compensate for her time cleaning Margo’s lawn.
She was surprised at what they did and promised to use the money they donated to clean someone else’s lawn.
A perfect way to pay it forward to others in need.
All this kindness started with a kind-hearted letter carrier.
“It’s called United States Postal Service, people forget the ‘service’ part. We’re here to help. It cost nothing to be kind,” Ra’sheen told 12 News.
