Pizza delivery guys are often taken for granted. We see them as just the men who ride their motorcycles or drive their cars to bring that beautiful box of goodness to our doorstep.
We pay, they give the change, maybe a tip if you’re generous, then they leave. I mean, who makes a career out of delivering pizza?
A man named Robert Peters did.
Robert Peters is one of Pizza Hut’s longest tenured pizza delivery guy. He is an employee in Tipton, Indiana, and has been delivering pies for an astonishing 31 years.
Peters’ drives a 28 year old Oldsmobile that he’d been having trouble with. I mean it is super old with tons of miles.
But why has Robert been at it for 31 years? Well the man himself explained,
“There were people in my family that were like, ‘Maybe you should consider something a little more financially stable.’ But it’s my purpose in life — trying to make people happy. You know, when you’re delivering to somebody, you may be the only face they see all day.”
Such a great guy.
It’s that attitude, and his devotion to customer service that got a customer named Tanner Langley to initiate a move so touching, the world had to see it to believe it.
Peters has become a household name. He’s got such a good reputation that when he delivers the pizza, he’s always greeted with a smile by his customers. 15% tips aren’t so bad either!
But in Tipton, Peters got an even better tip.
See, Peters always makes sure his customers get their exact change.
“He’ll drive 3 or 4 miles down the road in a blizzard just to bring you 15 cents in change,” Langley said.
15 cents. Surely that’s not worth the trip!
“It’s the moral of it. He didn’t want you to feel like you had to tip him because he didn’t have the change,” Langley continued.
Tanner knew Peters was a good man so he decided to give back. Tanner reached out to the community so they could give Robert a tip commensurate to his 31 years of awesome service.
The amazing community of Tipton pitched in and got Peters a shiny, red Chevy Malibu, including insurance and gas money. We’re talking $19,000 in total!
Here’s what Langley wrote on the campaign’s website,
“This community has a countless number of amazing citizens, but there are few people in this world that fill a room with smiles and happiness more than Robert Peters. Robert has been delivering pizzas in the same car for a plethora of years, and I think it is about time that he gets an upgrade to his current vehicle!”
The initial goal was for $12,000 but within two days received more than $18,000.
And how did good guy Peters react?
“I just hope that all those who made this happen will be blessed as much as they have blessed me. This has really been an awesome experience that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”
You bet he will!
Now he can deliver pizzas from end to end without the worry of a break down!
Which means those orders will arrive fresh and piping hot. Well, maybe not too hot what with the Malibu’s new air conditioning and all. But hey, a smile and a tip always goes a long way.
