Dogs are more than our best friends, they can become our heroes too. The story below shows just how loyal and brave a pooch can be during an emergency.
Latana Chai, a California resident, is the proud mom of a girl named Masailah and a pitbull named Sasha. The two were born within a few days of each other, and because of that, they have formed an incredible bond. Sasha would do anything for little Masailah.
Late one night, Chai was relaxing at her home in Stockton. Seven-month-old Masailah was asleep in her room, and Chai had no reason to think anything was wrong.
Suddenly, their puppy Sasha, who was outside, started barking and banging against the backyard door.
Confused, Chai let Sasha into the house. Chai wasn’t sure why the normally calm dog was barking so much.
Chai went outside to try and figure out why Sasha was so upset. She quickly discovered the reason: her neighbor’s house was on fire.
“As soon as I got to the door, she runs in (and) starts barking, and I’m like, ‘What the heck is wrong with you? Like, you don’t do this,'” Chai told KCRA. “I looked up and there’s black smoke coming from my neighbor’s house. You can see the flames coming out.”
Chai lives in a four-plex, and since her house and her neighbor’s house are connected, she knew it wouldn’t be long before the fire spread to her house. Chai ran into the house and sprinted up the stairs to Masailah’s room.
When Chai got to Masailah’s room, she saw that Sasha was already in there. The pit bull was attempting to drag the baby out of the room by her diaper.
“I ran into the room and I see Sasha,” Chai said. “She has my baby by the diaper just dragging her off the bed — trying to get her to safety.”

Chai grabbed Masailah and Sasha and ran out of the house. Once they were all safely outside, she called 911. As they waited, Chai pet Sasha and thanked her—if Sasha hadn’t alerted Chai to the fire, she might not have gotten out in time.
“She saved us all,” Chai wrote on a GoFundMe page. “She is our hero. Without her, we probably would’ve never made it out.”
While Chai and her family were safe, their home was unfortunately unhabitable. A family friend started a GoFundMe to help Chai get back on her feet, and it quickly met its goal. Everyone was touched by what Sasha did for her baby sister and mom.
After Chai’s story went viral, a reporter asked her if Chai thought of Sasha as part of the family. Chai had the perfect answer:
“She’s always been part of the family. Now she just gets steak!”
Sasha is an excellent example of how heroic dogs can be, especially when it’s to protect their loved ones from danger. There’s no doubt that these two are going to be best buds for life.
