Pit bulls are widely considered to be a ‘dangerous’ breed, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. When raised in the right environment, pit bulls are a wonderful dog breed that display incredible loyalty. They’re also very sweet and playful.

Plus, they often love kids.

How sick is that doggie in the shelter? The one with the waggly tail?

One shining example of how taking a chance on a pit bull can change the lives of not only the dog itself, but the family who adopt it, is that of a lucky old pitty who would come to be named Scarlett.

A young girl, referred to as “G”m with a big heart spotted Scarlett at the shelter and immediately took a shining. Unlike some of the other more healthy dogs, Scarlett had a snotty nose, and smelt badly of mange.

This was not enough to deter a compassionate 2-year-old though, as she turned to her mother and said, “Let the doggy out. Need help.”

G was patient even when the dog was shy and nervous about walking around. Oftentimes dogs who have been in shelters for a while can be tentative around new people, but something about G’s caring nature encouraged Scarlett to trust her.

The pair went out to the yard to play and Scarlett didn’t leave G’s side, following her everywhere.

She gave the dog hugs, kisses, and belly rubs, playing together as if they’d been pals their whole lives.

G even wiped the snot from the dog’s nose and the goop from her eyes with her dress.

This young girl showed so much love and affection for her new friend, and they soon become inseparable.

“Doggy sick need help,” G kept repeating.

Where many kids might look at a dog with snot, eye goop, and mangy skin and resist touching it, G wanted only to help and heal Scarlett.

Scarlett followed G around the yard, never leaving her side. It seems as if Scarlett decided straight away that G was to be her new best friend, and was not going to leave without her.

When Scarlett went back into her kennel, it became clear that G would not allow her new best friend to be left behind.

“Sick Doggy. Need help. Go home.”

They were few words, but no more was needed to share what was in this caring girl’s heart. So…Scarlett got to go home!

Now, these two BFFs never have to leave each other’s sides! Looking at Scarlett, you don’t see a vicious fighter or dangerous beast. You see a lonely, sick dog that just needed a helping hand and a huge heart.

All she needed was G’s relentless empathy and desire to help in order to prove that a pit bull can be as cuddly as any other dog.
