The Dogspotting Society is a group on Facebook for dog lovers all over the world. It’s a place for everyone to post pictures of mans best friend, whether its their own or one they saw in a park that day that they thought everyone needed to see. It’s also a place for discussion, making friends, posting pictures, and more.
Recently the group had an unlikely request from one of its patrons.
Stephen William Dale Shkuratoff is a big fan of the Dogspotting Society and an active member, however, he is blind. Recently he posted in the group asking if people would please upload descriptions of their dogs, along with their pictures so that he could enjoy them just the same.
“I love being a member of this group! I am blind and was hoping to ask for more dog descriptions, Like how soft the dog is for example. Bonus as always for dogs full of kisses and snuggles. Thanks for making me feel included. hope no one minds me asking for descriptions a lot recently.” his post read.
Since it was posted earlier in November, the post has been shared over 100 times, and received over 200 thousand comments, nearly all of which are detailed descriptions of peoples beloved pets.
“Maze is a little muscle packed turbocharged tank. She’s endlessly excited and ridiculously stubborn. Her ears are like velvet and her belly is smoother than a marble. I love the spot above her lip and under her nose where they meet. That spot is so soft and has such a unique feel. Her tail knocks over anything in its path. She is a destroyer of worlds. ” writes one Facebook user about her furry friend.
“I have a Boston terrier named Elma. Her name means apple in Turkish, because she is the apple of my eye. She is a very sweet and and quiet dog and rarely barks. We have to be careful she does not get shut in the bathroom by accident because she is so so quiet. She makes up for no loud barks with the loudest snores you’ve ever heard from an 18 pound animal. She is also an expert blanket hog and particularly likes faux fur blanket throws.” writes another user. And there are thousands of comments just like these, describing the personalities, favorite activities, and charm of dogs from all over the world.
Stephen was simply overwhelmed with the number of people that responded to his post. He writes further down the thread a heartfelt ‘thank you’ for all the lovely posts.
But more than just bringing Stephen a little bit of joy, he has brought attention to how Facebook groups can be more inclusive for people with disabilities like blindness. Let’s hope that this wholesome Facebook continues to grow and put a smile on people’s faces.
