Officers Reneeshia McIntyre and Delia Pesina have been partners for a long time and, by now, they communicate with their eyes only.
So, when they entered a Dallas apartment where a mother and her six children live, they both immediately knew they had to come back.
McIntyre and Pesina were on patrol around Old East Dallas, when a friendly toddler approached them and invited them inside the family apartment.
The 2-year-old invited the women over, so the officers went over to take a look.
In the apartment, they found a young mother and her six children between ages 2 and 11.
When the officers saw the apartment, they instantly thought the family had just moved in because there was nothing really in there. But they were wrong.
“I asked mom how long they had been living there, and she said a few months. My first instinct was they had just moved in because there was literally nothing in the apartment,” Pesina told CBSDFW. McIntyre shared: “She literally was washing styrofoam plates”.
The two officers had a chat with the mother and found out that she had fled an abusive relationship and she had moved there with her kids. But, obviously, she could hardly make ends meet, and the single mother was going through a really hard time.
When the officers left the apartment, they knew they had to do something to help this woman and her children.
McIntyre said: “You’re partners after so long and when we were leaving I immediately said to her ‘So we’re coming back aren’t we? We’re coming back, we’re going to take care of them.'”
So, they went back to the office and started a fundraiser among officers and the local community in order to help the family.
“The show of support was truly amazing and very overwhelming,” Officer Pesina told a local news outlet.
Dallas Police Department officers and community members were so touched by the family’s hardships that they donated enough money to furnish the small apartment- or at least buy the most necessary items.
Officers used the money they had just raised to buy beds and cribs for the children, mattresses, sheets, pillows, furniture, and organizers for the apartment. The officers brought everything to the family’s home, and assembled the furniture as well.
“We told the children ‘This is where you’re gonna be sleeping’. The excitement on their face was so heartfelt. We were touched. We had to fight back tears,” Officer McIntyre shared with CBSDFW.
Besides that, they also went grocery shopping and bought $250-worth of food and snacks for the family.
The young mother couldn’t be more grateful for everything these officers did for her. According to NBC 5, she said:
“I wish I could do more than say thank you to everyone that contributed to me and my children. We love ya’ll and really love the things you gave us. We are very much appreciative and grateful for you guys helping us.”
