It takes a village not to raise a child, but a school. One of the most important foundations of our society is our educational institutions.
These places of learning serve as a home for young people where they develop their knowledge and character.
The people there for them matter.
Given the role of our schools in the community, we should also remember that it is only as good as the people who make them.
And for this high school in Texas, they want to celebrate the people who make their school feel like family.
This company does just that.
The video starts with Brent, CEO of Dude. Be Nice driving. He shared that he was driving four hours north to a school named Byron Nelson High School.
According to its website, its mission is to inspire other people to treat themselves and others better.
In this episode, they were invited by the students of said high school so they can celebrate the contributions of three special people.
They were introduced to Officer Adam Watkins.
Watkins was about to clock in his fourth year at Byron Nelson and in this span of time, he was able to connect to the students and the scholastic community.
He confessed that while he’s part of the school’s security force, he was much more in tune with his three other aspects – a counselor, a mentor, and an educator.
He’s highly invested in the students and is active in school activities – even dress-up day.
They shared that his bulletin board is just filled with his photos with students.
Watkins said that he’s glad that they see him as a policeman they can be comfortable with.
“I’m a big po-po guy, but I’m a softy as well,” said Officer Watkins in the video.
He shared that his mission is just to be kind so that he can bridge the students to their local police force.
“One of these days when they’re going to need a police officer and they’re going to go, ‘Oh, I knew Officer Watkins, and he was very nice to me so I know that I can trust to go speak to an officer,’” he said to Spectrum News 1.
A pep rally like no other.
To celebrate his good deeds, the students organized a special pep rally.
Students were gathered together with their school mascot and band where they screamed out their favorite chants and evoked their school spirit.
Then, as the program commenced, the hosts said that their pep rally is a special one.
Seated on the floor just like the other students, Officer Watkins watched as videos of his kids were being played.
He had no idea.
They shared how kind and reliable Watkins is and how lucky the school is to have him. Officer Watkins can’t help but cry – because he is a softie after all.
A recognition that Officer Watkins deserves.
Together with him, they also recognized two students. Siblings Danielle and Whitney were also given due appreciation.
The siblings have been an important part of the student body as they would always go out of their way to make everyone feel included.
Together with Officer Watkins, they showed everyone what school spirit is all about – kindness and inclusion.
