Whether you live close to the ocean or take vacations to be near one, there’s something magical about going to the beach. There, you see families building sandcastles, having lunch, sunbathing, playing volleyball, surfing, boogie boarding, and of course, swimming. It’s fun and exciting for everyone.
Hidden danger
The ocean is also filled with hidden dangers such as stingray and sharks. Usually, lifeguards put out warnings if there’s any risk. But sometimes, things happen so quickly there’s simply no time to let swimmers know about a threat.
Close to shore
A lot of people, especially those who don’t spend much time at the beach don’t realize that even going just a few feet into the water could be potentially dangerous. Not only are sharks almost impossible to see but this also gives them an advantage of snatching unsuspecting “prey.”
Enjoying the outdoors
On July 16, 2020, Officer Adrian Kosicki along with his wife was spending time on the beach in Brevard County, Florida. Just like many other people, they just wanted to get outdoors. They walked in the sand while admiring the waves crashing to the shore.
His off-duty day
Since this was Officer Kisicki’s day off, he wanted to spend some special time with his loved one. It was gorgeous outside, making it ideal for a stroll on the beach. But he soon saw a shark as it began to approach a small boy in the water.
On his boogie board
This boy, just like other children, was having a blast. He was out in the water on his boogie board. But he had no idea a shark had set its eyes on him. On the other hand, Officer Kisicki knew this kid was in serious danger.
Captured on film
Just before this officer jumped into the water, someone began to film the entire incident. As Kisicki approached the young boy, he said, “Hey buddy, hey…there’s a shark right there.” As the creature got closer, its fins became visible.
Acting quickly
In a matter of seconds, Kisicki had reached the lad. He then grabbed him by the arm and as fast as he could, pulled him out onto the sand. There’s a strong possibility that his heroic action saved this boy’s life considering the shark was so close.
Recognizing his heroism
A spokesperson for the Cocoa Beach Police Department stated, “Adrian made the decision to quickly enter the water and pull the boy from the surf as the shark began to get dangerously close, within only a couple of feet at its nearest distance.”
Additional comments
The police department’s spokesperson went on to say that their officers are not shark experts. And without having any idea what the shark planned to do, Officer Kisicki’s actions were incredible. They added that the Cocoa Beach Police Department is all about helping people regardless of the situation.
Well-deserved praise
After the posts on the department’s Facebook page, people began posting comments of appreciation for what Kisicki had done. One poster stated that even a small shark could injury or kill a small child like that.
Although no one knows for sure what would’ve happened, this could’ve easily been a life or death situation. Kudos to his officer for going above and beyond the call of duty…on his day off no less.

OFFICER PULLS BOY FROM CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH SHARK
Cocoa Beach Police Officer Adrian Kosicki was off-duty Thursday evening, July 16, walking on the beach with his wife near the pier when they noticed a shark approaching a small boy on a boogie board. Adrian made the decision to quickly enter the water and pull the boy from the surf as the shark began to get dangerously close, within only a couple of feet at its nearest distance.
We’re certainly not marine biologists, educated and trained to differentiate between the various species of sharks, their respective feeding habits, and aggressiveness near swimmers. We just do what we do best—protect the public from harm.
Thanks to Adrian, we’ll never know what that shark’s intentions were, and that little boy will forever have a pretty cool story to tell. Great job!💪🦈
