Nine-year-old Klynn Scales knew her hero was the police officer that checked on her daily, but she never knew his name. She was a young girl with a troubled home life. She was growing up around neglect alongside her two younger brothers. The unnamed police officer was her shining light amidst the chaos. He ended up saving her life and she still never knew his name.
It would take her 20 years to learn his name and be able to thank him for saving her life.
Klynn’s mother battled an addiction and this brought chaos into Klynn’s life and home. Klynn recalls a 7-11 convenience store that she would steal food from just to feed herself and her two younger brothers. At nine-year’s-old, Klynn had more responsibilities and worries than she was capable of handling. Her childhood was troubled but it was not without hope.
That hope came in the form of Officer Jeffrey Colvin.
“Through all the bad situations, I would just picture him saying that he was here for us and that if we ever need him, he would be right there. He would always protect us, and so those words would come to me during the worst times of my childhood life,” Klynn Scales told FOX 4.
Officer Colvin, now Staff Sergeant, stayed true to his word.
Colvin pinky promised Klynn that he would check on her every day and he did, while she lived in Kansas City. One day she did not appear at the door and so he went inside her house to look for her. He found her weak, pale, and sick. He quickly rushed her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with malnutrition.
Officer Colvin’s pinky promise saved Klynn’s life and she never forgot about him, her real-life hero.
It has been over twenty years since Officer Colvin saved Klynn Scales life. She had moved out of state and the two had lost contact with each other. She never knew his name but was determined to meet him again and thank him. Klynn received the help from the Kansas City Police Department and was able to learn his name and have the opportunity to reunite with him.
If she thought he had forgot about her, she would soon realize she was wrong. He remembered her too.
“I had actually thought about her and wondered whatever happened with her … Most times we go through our career not realizing we truly helped anybody out,” Colvin told FOX 4.
Klynn met with Jeffrey Colvin to not only thank him for saving her life, but to ask for one more favor.
Klynn had decided to become a police officer too, in honor of the man who had saved her. She was about to graduate soon and wanted him to be the one to pin her badge at the ceremony. Colvin was honored and drove to Texas to attend and be a part of her ceremony. He had changed the course of her life and wanted him to see how much so.
“I was very proud of her. She really beat all statistical odds to get where she was … Most people would look at her 9-year-old self and basically write her off and say this girl doesn’t have a chance in the world. She’s not going to amount to anything. She obviously proved everybody wrong there,” Colvin said to ABC 13.
Klynn Scales made a plaque in honor of Colvin that reads,
“A promise made, a promise kept, walking in the footsteps of a true hero!”
A true hero indeed! Watch the full reunion right below.
