It’s not everyday you’re given the choice of saving a life. Should that day ever come to you, you should know that mustering up the bravery to do it is way harder than it sounds.
It can be easy to fantasize about playing hero, but no amount of fantasizing can prepare you for the time you’re actually asked to risk your own life.
Tyler Dison, a 24-year-old officer, saved this toddler’s life without a second thought.
And hearing him explain how he did it really puts things into perspective.
It began when a fire broke out in an apartment. At the time, Officer Dison didn’t know what caused the fire.
The sight was Rogersville, Tennessee. The young officer was in his vehicle when calls about the fire aired on the radio.
Dison was closest to the scene. He could have waited till the department assigned the task to another unit, but Dison wanted to take the initiative. Lives were on the line, and he was the closest.
When he got there, he was greeted by the sight of a burning apartment building and a screaming woman.
She was panicking since her 3-year-old child was trapped inside.
“It was less than 30 seconds, I got out of my car, she was screaming ‘My baby’s inside!” – Dison provided his firsthand account of how things went down
Officer Dison knew this was no time to sit by. He ran inside the building, through the scorching flames and heavy smoke.
The fires had taken their toll, and these were no small flames. The young police officer was risking his life to save another.
“I gotta save this child at all costs.” – Officer Dison recalls thinking to himself right before he did it
After not long, he came back out with the child in his arms.
The boy was lethargic and scared, but alive and safe. As for Officer Dison, he had a few mild burns and a melted uniform. But he was in one piece.
The boy was treated at UAB hospital, and was returned to his family when everything was taken care of. Needless to say, that could have ended much worse.
“On this far side flames were shooting out of this window. Heavy smoke was rolling through the rest of the windows and when I got upstairs heavy smoke was showing.” – He described
The young officer’s fearless approach and quick thinking are the reason this boy survived.
He certainly wouldn’t have made it had Dison not leaped to action when he was just 30 seconds away.
Dison was actually a firefighter once. This was before he switched careers to wear a badge. I suppose his past work experience helped in that regard.
And don’t worry, the young officer will get his credit.
The Rogersville police chief at their station, Brian Hudson, assures us that Tyler Dison will be honored and praised for his life-saving, heroic move.
