We all know that nurses are basically earth angels, people who work tirelessly to protect and care for the humans around them.

But nurse Liz Smith might be eligible for sainthood after taking her work home with her.

Smith, a pediatric nurse, at Franciscan Children’s Hospital in Massachusetts always wanted to be a mother.

Unfortunately, she suffered from infertility even after going through treatments that were unsuccessful.

She never considered fostering or adopting a child until she first laid eyes on a baby Gisele.

Even when her co-workers brought it up. According to KMOV4, Gisele was born premature and weighed a little over a pound. She suffered medical problems as a result of her mother’s drug use during pregnancy.

Since no one had visited Gisele in the three months she was at the hospital, the nurses made sure to pay special attention to her.

And for some reason, Smith’s co-workers had a hunch that Gisele and Smith were destined to be together.

Smith was asked whether or not she had met Gisele yet.

“I said, ‘No, why?'” Smith told CNN.

“‘She needs a medical foster home and you two are the perfect pair,'” her co-worker explained.

At that point, Smith hadn’t thought about it any further. But when Smith saw Gisele being wheeled through the hospital in a stroller about a week later, it was love at first sight.

“Who’s this beautiful angel?” Smith asked the nurse who was wheeling the baby around. “Her name is Gisele.”

That began the process of Smith eventually becoming Gisele’s mother.

“It was an emotional roller coaster,” Smith told CNN later Thursday. “When I initially started fostering her, the goal was reunification with her birth parents. I always had that as a reality in the back of my mind while I was taking care of her, but in the moment (I) knew she needed and deserved every ounce of love I had to give her.”

Gisele’s birth parents were allowed to see her during supervised visits but they started visiting less after time.

Eventually, the state terminated their parental rights.

Gisele’s birth parents realized that they were unable to care for her and supported Smith in adopting Gisele.

“It was bittersweet. I was experiencing this tremendous gain and happiness in my life where others were experiencing the opposite.”

Thanks to Smith’s love and care, Gisele has surprised her doctors with how well she is doing.

She is healthy, strong, and absolutely thriving. Though the child still gets the majority of her nutrition through a feeding tube, she looks like any other beautiful and happy 2-year-old girl.

“We talk about the power of love, but to witness how it can transform a life and to witness how it transformed her life and mine is unbelievable,” Smith said. “I have never been happier or stronger and just I couldn’t imagine life without her.”
