We all have things we are passionate about, but not many of us can go out of the way to support them. One young woman is using her passion for travel and adventure to raise money for educating young girls in Kenya. She is currently rollerblading across the United States and has no money of her own for the journey. She is relying on the kindness of others to get her from one place to the next and to help her raise money for her cause.
Yanise Ho developed a love for travel at a young age.
She also wants to help women feel empowered. She has traveled to many places, but this is her biggest adventure yet. She started her journey in March when she left Florida to head for Los Angeles. She posted a photo on Instagram with the caption,
“Finally taking off from Miami. It’s quite an emotional moment for me I must say. I’ve longed for this very minute to happen for two years! My expedition across America (without money) on skates is happening. You could now live track my progress on www.yaniseho.com. Every mile, I’m dedicated to the belief of human goodness. Live with faith and kindness because that’s the golden path to happiness and harmony :)”
Ho recently rollerbladed from Savannah, Georgia to Miami, Florida, and founded “The Bladress Scholarship” project.”
She is now ready to make the 6,000-mile journey to California. She has hosts who are offering her food and a place to sleep during her travels, but she will make most of it alone.
Police departments and other agencies have reached out to let her know she has their support. They have even asked that she let them know when she is coming through so they can tell their officers and others to keep an eye out for her. She is amazed by all the kindness that people have shown.
She also has a fundraiser page set up to help raise more money for her cause.
The campaign says,
“My journey is inspired by a desire to empower girls worldwide. All funds raised will be donated to One Girl Can, to provide bright and deserving girls living in poverty in Kenya with secondary school scholarships. Education is crucial to ending the vicious cycle of poverty, child marriage, and gender inequality. More importantly, it provides an opportunity for girls to reach their full potential and pursue a life of their choosing.
The project is based on my belief – love is the most magical and wonderful thing that exists. The freedom to pursue a relationship of our choosing, based on love, shared interests, and compatibility is something many of us take for granted. Yet there are currently millions of girls who are married before they can even comprehend the concept of romantic love. Some become wives when they are as young as 8 years old to a husband 5 times their age, who often has multiple wives. One of the most common causes of death for girls aged between 15 and 19 in developing nations is pregnancy and childbirth. Girls are seen as a reproductive tool, a money tree, and a laborer. Being able to voice their opinions, let alone believing in their untapped potential, is an elusive dream. But education is proven to be the single most powerful method to change the old concept from Girls Can’t to Girls Can. Together, let’s share our love and freedom to love with these girls in Kenya. Together, let’s end child marriage.”
Ho believes that there is more good than bad in the world and she thinks her journey will help prove that.
She wants people to see that the world is good and kind and not a bad place. She posted,
“My mission is to show that there are amazing people in the world, every day I have no plans, just faith and the goodness of people. Somehow, I always stumble upon the best people in the world. Every day I feel like everyone is my family, and this is how the world should be.”
