Love has no age and often times we hear stories of elderly people become extremely lonely as they begin to lose friends. At 93 years young, Sylvia wasn’t your average bride, but neither was her 88-year-old husband-to-be, Frank.
And guess what, this Aussie couple’s fairytale romance wasn’t exactly by the book, either!
The couple first met over two decades ago when they lived in the same retirement community. At the time, Sylvia was 73 and Frank was 68.
Frank had been proposing to Sylvia every day for 15 years, but she always refused on principle.
She felt that she would be dishonoring her late husband’s memory if she took another man’s name.
When she fell ill and moved away to be closer to her family, it seemed like their love story was doomed to have a not-so-happily-ever-after ending.
Thankfully Sylvia’s health improved, and when she discovered that there was no law preventing her from keeping her surname if she remarried.
It was then that the widow decided it was finally time to honor the living and tie the knot!
But of course, that created a brand new problem – what in the world was a seasoned gal like her going to wear to her wedding?
Enter her brand new Facebook friends!
The sassy senior first caught the attention of social media when she asked Facebook to pick out the perfect wedding day dress.
Photos posted by clothing retailer Birdsnest, where Sylvia shopped for her outfit, show her posing in a selection of modern, floral, vintage lace, and even a figure-hugging dress!
A wedding to talk about
She definitely had a favorite color, and instead of a white wedding, hers was shaping up to be a non-traditional one filled with deep, red-wine hues.
With the help of her new friends, Sylvia settled on a bridal dress that was conservative and lacey, which seemed just about right for a classy lady of her caliber.
The votes were in
Not surprisingly, fans had overwhelmingly voted for dress ‘C’ – because one can never go wrong with a string of pearls and lots of lace!
She also purchased dress ‘D’ – which is sure to knock Frank’s socks off when the two go on a fancy dinner date.
The wedding ceremony took place near a pretty lake in Ainslie, Australia, where 60 friends looked on as Sylvia and Frank exchanged vows.
Frank was ever the romantic gentleman, and only had love in his eyes as he told his bride:
“You have made me what I am, and what I hope to be.”
As the pair exchanged rings, they said, “I give myself to you today and forever.”
The happy couple
When the couple finally said their I-do’s and were officially wed, Frank enthusiastically cheered, “Hooray, about time!”
After 20 years of asking for Sylvia’s hand in marriage, Frank finally got his wish.
“I accepted the challenge, or the contract, whichever way you want to look at it.”
While most couples share lots of kisses on their happy day, Sylvia couldn’t let the day end without saying what needed to be said.
Without missing a beat, the great-grandmother suddenly blurted out a raunchy bedroom joke right after she got hitched!
Obviously, Sylvia is still very much young at heart, maybe even like a teenager in some ways. When she spoke about marrying at her age, she mentioned:
“I don’t feel 93 or act 93, I still get up to mischief and like dancing and playing about.”
The hilarious moment was shared by the Today Show in a segment that can be viewed in the video below.
It was so unexpected that she left everyone giggling and gasping for air! The newscasters couldn’t believe she’d really said that! It just goes to show you’re never too old to have a dazzling ring on your finger – or a raunchy sense of humor!
