Why did the chicken cross the road? Well, to go to work at Indiana University Police Academy.
It’s a brilliant way of testing cadets’ “demeanor, focus and sense of humor”. If you’re familiar with the Police Academy movies the you’d understand how important it is to become a cop.
Cadets are made to stand still as an officer walks around with a squeaky rubber chicken, which he squeezes in the ears and faces of random cadets on the field. What a job.
But if a cadet breaks composure, smiles, or even laughs, he or she has to get down on the ground in a plank position and probably do some push ups.
Composure is a trait all cops need to have.
The training is unorthodox and downright hilarious, and there’s no better way to test the cadets. It’s all fun and games until a situation calls for composure and action.
No one wants to burst out laughing during an operation or a bust. It doesn’t help that movies like The Naked Gun and Police Academy portray cops in a comedic light.

This was the cadets’ final week at the academy. The senior officers must have wanted to have a little fun at their expense. In the name of training and a sort of welcome initiation maybe.
“This is the first time we’ve conducted the test at the IU Police Academy,” the police academy told a local station. “One of our instructors saw it elsewhere, and we thought it would be a nice way to have some fun and let off some steam.”
No chicken for dinner that night!
Graduation was just around the corner anyway. Still, most of the guys remained rock solid, even with the chicken an inch from their face. Though a female cadet and a few of the boys broke easily.
These are the cops who would share a joke with a random stranger given the opportunity.
A viewer named Scott shared an interesting comment saying,
“Not sure if this is true or not, but I heard this was a legit test and the ones who laughed (despite having to do pushups) were actually praised afterwards because of the fact that they showed human emotion and that’s very important for a cop. Again, don’t know if that’s true or not or if it’s just some dude with a rubber chicken having some fun.”
That does make sense.
It’s so much more fun to learn with a bit of humor. Imagine these guys running after a criminal only to stumble onto some chickens and laughing. That’s a convict gone!
The anticipation of not knowing when the trainer will walk up to you to squeeze a rubber chicken in your face must have been dreadful for these future officers. That trainer sure had a lot of fun!
Imagine looking back on your years as a cop and realizing you lost to a rubber chicken. Priceless.
