It takes a lot of courage to get up on stage and perform in front of an audience, especially if you’re a young boy performing a stand-up comedy routine for the first time in front of all your peers at the school talent show!
That’s exactly what brave Braydon Startare was trying to do at his elementary school in Glassboro, New Jersey, when he suddenly got struck by stagefright.
Braydon froze up on the stage, struggling to remember any of the jokes he’d worked so hard memorizing up to that point. Luckily, his dad was waiting in the wings, ready to save the day!
Braydon had been practicing in preparation for his school’s annual talent show, and hoped to make his pals laugh with some fun jokes like “Why did the dinosaur cross the road? Because the chicken wasn’t born yet!”
Sadly, it seemed like all his hard work was about to come crashing down around him as he stood on the stage, utterly frozen with nerves.
It got so bad that little Braydon even covered his eyes and sat down on the stage, simply wishing to be anywhere else. But that’s when his dad got involved.
Braydon’s dad, Brian, is the sort of guy who knows what it’s like to be behind the mic.
He’s worked as an announcer in the past and understands the pressure his son was having to deal with on that day.
In an interview with PHL 17, Brian explained that he just couldn’t sit there and watch his son struggle any longer. “You got this Bray! You got this Bray,” he yelled from the crowd, before deciding to walk right up to the stage and help his son deliver his jokes.
Brian knew all of Braydon’s jokes, as he’d been helping him prepare for the show, so he sat beside him on the stage and started telling each one, handing the mic over to his son to deliver the punchline each time, much to the delight of the audience!
Braydon’s classmates and teachers were soon rolling around with laughter as the father-son duo performed their routine side-by-side.
It went so well that Brian even joked they should take the show on the road and perform together again in the future. Now that’s one double act we’d love to see.
Brian says he had a little hesitation about getting up and maybe hogging the spotlight, but in the end, we think he definitely made the right call!
His presence helped to give Braydon the confidence he needed to get his jokes back on track, and everyone had a really great time watching the show.
“When I got finished I got a little emotional because I felt so overwhelmed for him. It’s a moment we will always have,” explained Brian. “I hope I instilled some trust with him that he knows that I’m going to be there for him, as all fathers should.”
