Neil Diamond is one of the great, iconic American rock musicians.
His career has spanned from the 1960s all the way up to the present day. Among his most famous songs are “Sweet Caroline,” “Cracklin’ Rosie” and “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon.” Needless to say, his career longevity has proven him as one of the greats and he has touched the hearts of millions. At 76 years old, Diamond has recently been facing some health problems.
Though he was scheduled to go on tour, Diamond posted an announcement that the tour was cancelled—and that he was retiring.
Diamond posted a statement on his website apologizing to his fans.
It read:
“It is with great reluctance and disappointment that I announce my retirement from concert touring. I have been so honored to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years.
My sincerest apologies to everyone who purchased tickets and were planning to come to the upcoming shows.
I plan to remain active in writing, recording and other projects for a long time to come.
My thanks goes out to my loyal and devoted audiences around the world. You will always have my appreciation for your support and encouragement. This ride has been ‘so good, so good, so good’ thanks to you.”
What the note didn’t mention, however, is that Diamond had recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease.
Major news outlets like The New York Times have bid Diamond fond farewells with congratulations on an amazing career.
Still, more impressive than the general press coverage is the outpouring of love from the world’s biggest Neil Diamond fans.
Carnie Wilson of Wilson Phillips expressed her gratitude for his music:
Others took it further, saying they wouldn’t accept a refund and would forward their money to Parkinson’s research.
These efforts were even recognized by Diamond himself on Twitter:
Though Diamond is having health troubles, the support and love from his fans have helped buoy his spirits during this hard time.
Artists spend most of their lives creating works that make people feel something and that bring us together. As they get older, it’s always inspiring to see that generosity of spirit paid back—especially when it’s needed the most.
