Neighbors kindly help fix up elderly woman’s home so she can avoid fines
The elderly woman didn't know how she would fix her home and property - nor pay thousands of dollars in fines. Luckily, she had kind-hearted neighbors who decided to come up with a plan.

Ann Glancey, a retired teacher has always lived in the same house in New Jersey. She grew up there, and she has spent all of her life in it. So much so, that she considers herself a part of it.

“I’ve lived in the house so long, I’m nearly becoming an antique myself,” Glancey told CBS News at the time.

A few years ago, the elderly woman found herself in a difficult situation. She could not afford to fix the house, but she also didn’t have enough money to pay fines that were adding up to $3,000 per day.

The fines were sent to her because of three violations, namely, “peeling paint, three-foot-high grass, and an abandoned 1984 Plymouth”, People reported.

All of the above were code violations, according to Hamilton Township, New Jersey. But when the woman received the fines, she was desperate because she felt she could do nothing about it.

She could not fix the house herself, and she didn’t have any close relatives or friends that could help her.

In fact, she hardly ever talked to her neighbors. She was a very private person that had not built any bonds with people living close by.

That was until Adam and Kristin Polhemus moved in right next door.

“Until my wife and I moved in, no neighbors had a conversation with her,” Adam told People. “She had no relations with anyone in the neighborhood.”

Adam and Kristin started talking to her when they passed by her house, and over the years, it became a daily routine to stop by and have a chat with Ann.

At some point, they found out that the elderly lady faced difficulties regarding fixing her house or paying fines, and they decided to help her. However, she didn’t accept help easily.

“Every time we brought up repairs, she would change the subject,” Adam said.

Only a while later, Adam and Kristin arranged everything. They came into contact with other community members, and all of them worked together in order to fix Glancey’s house.

“A little love goes a long way, and just a little scraping, primer, and light carpentry have done a world of difference not only for this little historic home, but for a neighbor’s heart. Please come join us today as we rebuild,” Kristin posted on Facebook on day 2 of repairs.

More than 20 people stopped by to help with the exterior of the house, grass cutting, and decorations. And it was all worth it. They turned the old home into a beautiful vintage property that one was happy to pass by.

Ann couldn’t be happier and more grateful for the neighbors’ gesture.

But this was also an opportunity for community members to get closer and work together for a good cause.

As neighbor Kyle Gulsby said,

“Having the community come together as a whole was a great opportunity for everyone to meet up again.”

What an amazing story of kindness and generosity.
