Gean LeVar lost her husband of 58 years in their Glendale, Arizona, home so when police arrived and entered her home, she didn’t expect their reaction.
Gean’s house was condemned when the police found it in such horrible shape.
Not exactly a safe place to be in especially for an elderly lady.
LeVar lost her husband and her home in the same day. This poor old lady became homeless.
Right across the street was LeVar’s neighbor, Carmen Silva.
She barely knew LeVar but when she found out that Gean had no children or family, Silva stepped up.
“I told her, ‘Don’t worry Gean, we’re going to fix it,'” Silva said to CBS News.
Now for many others, it would seem like Silva took being neighborly to the extreme. But she really didn’t see it that way.
Carmen is a very selfless person and she showed it.
“I’ve always taught my kids to take care of their elders,” Silva shared.
Words that many of us should take to heart.
Carmen and her family live in a small three-bedroom house.
She has eight children but they all willingly made room for Gean.
Carmen’s sons gave up their bed for Gean.
The boys chose to sleep on the couch, wholeheartedly welcoming their new adopted grandmother.
And who wouldn’t want to have another grandmother?
“She looks very happy, and I believe it’s because she has a whole family now,” Silva continued.
LeVar, all smiles and relaxed said her new family “means everything.”
The nonprofit group Operation Enduring Gratitude helps Arizona veterans and their families, so when they heard about LeVar’s troubles, they moved to help her.
Gean’s late husband was a Navy veteran, so the volunteers went ahead and renovated her old house, turning it into a decent, safe, and definitely livable place for her.
All this while Gean settled in nicely with Carmen and her wonderful family.
“We’re all joining together to do one thing, and that’s to make somebody’s life whole,” one of the volunteers said.
It’s an act of kindness that’s touched so many people.
“Carmen Silva and her family are amazing. Her sons are being raised right because the gladly gave up their room for Jean. What a wonderful story.” says a viewer named Janetta McGee.
Another viewer said,
“What a great outcome for what could have been an otherwise devastating ending. This brought tears to my eyes. What beautiful people to care so much for a stranger, who are no longer strangers, but a family that care for each other.”
LeVar’s house came out really well, and since it was no longer condemned, she plans to share it with the Silvas.
A simple act of love, of kindness, can transform a person’s life.
Carmen and her family made a new friend, a new grandmother. Gean as well found that she doesn’t have to be alone.
They found each other, and will now share their lives.
That’s what families do.
