As we grow older, we gather a myriad of memories along our tumultuous journey called life.
Whether the memories are happy or sad, all of our contradicting feelings are the ones we treasure in life as we continue to move forward.
It is comforting to relive those memories, replaying each scene again and again in your mind.
It is like having a whole repertoire of movies in different genres at your disposal that you can watch nonstop. However, it becomes challenging for someone who has Alzheimer’s disease.
Alzheimer’s disease is a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms eventually grow severe enough to interfere with daily tasks as time passes by.
And anyone who knows or has a loved one who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease can tell you that it is a family diagnosis.
The effects of the disease extend beyond the individual to their primary caregiver and everyone who loves and cares for them. That is why family members must learn how to cope with new responsibilities between the people involved, changing family dynamics, and their varying emotional responses to their loved ones.
And in a video uploaded on YouTube, a touching scene between a mother and a daughter will surely bring tears to your eyes.
In the viral video, Kelly Gunderson asks her mother, Daphne Tresher, if the latter knew she was her mama.
At first, it could appear as a normal exchange between a mother and a daughter, except for the fact that Daphne is 87 years old and is living with Alzheimer’s.
Kelly explains that during the early stages of the disease, her mother develops a short-term memory where she can’t remember the conversation that she just had, and it really breaks their hearts into pieces seeing their beloved mother like this.
They have to admit to themselves that this has become the new normal and they have to deal with it for their mother’s sake.
Kelly likes to record her conversations with her mom, and this is one of those. Unbeknownst to Kelly, this simple conversation will become one of most memorable.
Kelly asks her mom one question at a time as she maintains eye contact with her.
She speaks to Daphne in a slow and clear manner. She engages with her mom like this, letting her know how much she loves her.
Whenever Kelly asks a question, she gives her mother plenty of time to respond.
She exercises patience and offers reassurance that is calming her mother. And when Daphne says “I love you” to her daughter, Kelly almost breaks into tears as emotions wash over her.
And when Kelly asks Daphne if she recognizes her, it is a tear-jerking moment.
For the first time in a very long time, Daphne recognizes Kelly, and her heart is filled with so much joy.
And what makes it more special for her is that she has an identical twin sister. The fact that her mother remembers her is truly a blessing for Kelly.
Both women continue to enjoy each other’s company, showering each other with love and affection.
For Kelly and their family, despite all of the changes, they still love Daphne as she is. And they will continue to love her through it all.
