Strangers running up to our door and screaming can mean one of two things:
- We have a crazy person to deal with
- Something is terribly wrong
Regardless of which one it is, neither of them is great news! For one homeowner in Scotts Valley, California, however, it was a real lifesaver.
Courtney Polito and her family were off for a vacation when something terrible happened.
As she was out and about, she got a notification on her phone. When she went to check her Ring Doorbell, she saw a man standing on her porch. Not being home, she felt safe talking to him although that isn’t usually what’s recommended!
Ring Doorbells notify you when they detect movement near the door it’s located on.
When the stranger was repeatedly walking up to the door, it triggered the system and sent a notification to Polito. When she answered, she saw a man in a yellow shirt who claimed to have been jogging past the house.
As anyone would want to, Polito wanted to find out why a stranger was repeatedly on her porch and knocking on the door.
When she finally answered, it all became clear. The stranger was clearly desperate and explained what was going on.
“I saw him running back and forth,” said homeowner Courtney Polito. “So I answered it and he said, ‘Hello, do you see there’s smoke coming out of the top of your house?'”
At the same time he told her, she was able to hear the smoke alarms going off through her doorbell microphone.
Thinking quickly, she gave the door passcode to the man who promptly ran inside to help! The two family dogs were inside, as well as their rabbit and a cat. Running in, the man was able to pull all of the animals to safety!
Even more, he was able to contain the fire before it spread too far.
“The fire department said 10 more minutes and the house would have been gone,” she said.
After helping, the man ran off!
“It takes a special kind of person [to] go into a burning house to save animals,” said Polito’s husband, Tony.
“I want to give him a hug,” Courtney Polito said. “I’ll bring him to lunch. I’ll bring him dinner. I don’t know … I just want to thank him so much and let him know how thankful we are. My kids, my husband, we would be devastated if we lost our pets, let alone our home.”
