Alicia Sharp is the kind of mother who doesn’t shy away from punishing her sons if they do something wrong. She has definitely proven that. When her two young sons snuck out of her home and vandalized a war memorial in their hometown of Barberton, Ohio, Sharp came up with a rather fitting punishment for them.

She wanted to make sure her boys learned why their actions were wrong and that they shouldn’t ever do anything similar ever again.

So, she got to thinking.

The Sharp boys snuck out of the house.

Alicia spoke to local media about how her young sons stole some flowers from a memorial after having snuck out of her house.

“My two little boys decided to sneak out of the house last Sunday morning with their friend and ripped flowers out of the Military Memorial at Lake Anna in Barberton,” she said to Cleveland 19.

A suitable punishment.

Upon discovering what her sons did, Alicia decided that the punishment needed to fit the crime. They needed to apologize for what they did and in this particular case, that required standing outside the memorial with a sign explaining what they did and why they are sorry.

“I made them stand with signs down by the lake for two hours on Friday saying what they did and apologizing,” Sharp continued.

The boys were likely pretty embarrassed by this but they also learned a very valuable lesson.

Their monthly allowance was taken away.

The mother works as a bartender at a place where many veterans go to. She decided that her sons also needed to make financial restitution to the people of the military. Alicia docked her sons their entire allowance for the month ($100) and used it to buy food for the veterans that came into her work.

“They donated their allowances so I could buy food. Most of the folks who come in here are veterans,” Sharp said about the bar she works at.

Friends and colleagues praise the mother’s unique punishment.

Many of Alicia’s friends and co-workers have praised how she’s handled the situation. It has turned into a fantastic “teachable moment” for her boys as well. Alicia says that the punishment helped them realize that their actions were wrong.

“They are starting to realize the severity of what they’ve done,” Sharp said. “I don’t think initially they did. Now they’re starting to realize why those flowers were there and why those people’s names were on that wall.”

Kids are kids.

People were upset by what the two Sharp boys did but Alicia’s suitable punishment has been praised by locals.

“It wasn’t right for what they did. But kids are kids,” Dan Ady said to Cleveland 19.

“She’s trying to make up for it. She’s done a good job and she feels sorry about this too,” he would also add.

Learning a lesson.

Kids will be kids. They are going to make a lot of mistakes before they become adults. If they have good parents like Alicia, however, they will learn from those mistakes and grow into respectable adults.
