These days, it’s pretty dangerous for immunocompromised people to leave their homes. With the coronavirus continuing to spread around the world, individuals who are most at risk are staying indoors.
While others might be going to the grocery store or the pharmacy, not everyone has that option. That’s why delivery people are being celebrated as heroes. They bring food and supplies to people who need it during this difficult time.
While some may think only older people are at risk, that’s not the case. Younger people can be immunocompromised as well. Young adults, teens, kids, and newborn babies can get sick from this disease.
Parents worry about their kids
Especially parents with immunocompromised kids worry about their children catching the coronavirus. They also worry if they get it that they can’t fight it off. One of those parents is Kimberly Bays from Easton, Pennsylvania. Living with her is a daughter named Emma who’s immunocompromised.
She doesn’t want her child to get sick
Bays is worried about even everyday tasks, like going to the store. Something so simple could expose Emma to the virus. As a loving and caring mom, that’s the last thing she wants.
Bays depends on delivery services
Since Bays and her daughter can’t leave the house right now, they’re getting what they need from delivery services. The people who drop groceries and supplies at their house are heroes. Otherwise, Emma would be at risk.
A big shoutout
Bays knew she had to do something to thank all the incredible delivery workers making a huge difference. That’s when she decided to put a note outside her door. It was perfectly placed so the delivery people could see it.
The note couldn’t be sweeter
On the note, Bays explains her situation. She writes, “Hi! Thank you for delivering our packages to us. We have an immunocompromised baby and deliveries are essential to her health.”
The note continues
But she had more to say. “You are helping to keep our daughter alive and well. We are grateful to all those who are on the front lines delivering to our family.”
She included a picture
She wanted the delivery people to put a face to the person they were helping. So, she taped a picture of Emma to the door along with the note. She looks adorable in her pink overalls. It probably warmed the delivery person’s heart to see her.
Bays posted to her Instagram
Kimberly Bays then posted a picture of her note to Instagram with a caption about what these delivery people meant to her. It said, “I feel like this doesn’t even begin to explain how grateful we are to these delivery drivers, train operators, cargo professionals, & truck drivers. These amazing individuals really are helping Emma stay ALIVE and well. Thank your delivery drivers, if you can. This is in actuality putting just one face to this global crisis.”
FedEx and UPS responded
When FedEx and UPS saw the post, they reached out to Bays to show their appreciation. They said they were committed to helping families just like hers. UPS posted their response on Facebook, “Thank you House of Bays, and thank you to all of our hardworking UPS employees. As critical infrastructure, we’re honored and grateful to be able to help people in need.”
What an inspiration
Kimberly Bays’ thank you is a reminder that we should all be grateful for the heroes…the people working hard every day for others. From healthcare workers to grocery store clerks to delivery people, these are the individuals keeping society together at this difficult time. Maybe everyone can find a way to thank the essential workers in our lives.
It’s heartwarming to see people coming together to make other people’s lives easier and safer.
