A mother from Carrboro. North Carolina, caught her daycare worker on surveillance camera, breastfeeding her son without permission. The video came from security footage inside Carrboro Early School.

Mom was outraged when she found out daycare worker breastfeed her son without permission.

The mom, Kaycee Oxendine, said she hopes that police will press charges. The footage shows the worker as she breastfeeds Oxendine’s 3-month-old son without the mother’s permission or knowledge.

Oxendine, who works as a pre-kindergartner teacher, explained that her son’s teacher told her the 3-month-old baby was constipated. Another woman working in the nursery then asked her if she could breastfeed the child to help but was twice refused by Oxendine.

“She said that she had a son and did I want her to put my child to her breast and breastfeed?” Oxendine later told the media. “And I said no, that’s nasty. We don’t do things like that.”

Despite her refusing to give permission, Oxendine said that only moments after she had left the room, the video showed the woman breastfeeding her son for a couple of seconds.

“As a mom, you’ve taken something from me, because I wasn’t able to defend my child,” Oxendine said. “I wasn’t there.”

Speaking about the incident, the daycare director told the media that the woman was no longer there and that she worked for more than ten years at Orange Chatham Early School. According to the director, she was licensed.

‘I’ve never seen anything quite like this”

The woman was fired soon after the incident took place but Oxendine was determined that she face criminal charges. She said that later that day she took her son to a hospital after he became ill. She also explained her baby was born prematurely and is lactose intolerant.

“To me, a criminal act was committed against him,” she said. “Not only did you put your breast to my son, you also made my son sick because he’s lactose intolerant. So you’ve put something in his body that his body can’t digest.”

Carrboro and Orange Chatham Early Schools passed all inspections less than a month prior to the incident, the director said.

The DA later gave a statement in which he said that the police dept. has the last say in the matter and will decide whether to press charges or not.

“This is a very unusual case,” he said. “I’ve been practicing criminal law for over 32 years and I’ve never seen anything quite like this.”

The mom stated she’s not angry at the director or at the childcare center and that the blame rests solely on the woman who breastfed her son without permission.

Investigation underway

While the police dept. said they were investigating the incident, no charges were pressed. Experts explained that there are always risk associated with sharing breastmilk.

“Human milk has the potential to contain infectious agents as well as medications or drugs a woman may be using and transmit them to the baby who consumes it,” a doctor said.

As it seems, the incident is not likely to result in pressing charges against the woman but it raises a number of important questions about breastfeeding without permission from the mother.
